Thoughts on Gibson.

In his era we have seen the ownership of clubs move from millionaires, to multi-millionaires; to billionaires.

And the club that he helped to haul out of administration is still in there, with a shout at taking a place at the top table.

I genuinely believe that Boro could have done no better, when it comes to owners.

Long may you run, Gibbo!

Agreed.. I’ve stated this stat a few times but since the mid ‘80’s we are one of just a few (about 15 I think) clubs to have spent every season in the top 2 divisions of English football.

Not bad for a small town in the ar5e end of the North East!

Be good to get a general feeling from everybody on the board.

@zzzzz remember it well. Kind of what inspired me to post the threads

Appointing Scott and Carrick great choices but appalling decision making for 13 years plus before that .At the moment things are looking good but unfortunately football has changed alot.

Not a chance..
The idea of selling something so financially screwed is a joke.
Nobody would pick the club up for free unless the majority of the debt to Group was converted to equity, or written off.

Anyway, as we stand on the brink of the PL, Gibson has the chance to stop losing money and maybe even start to reduce the Undertakings to Group if Carrick and others can establish us back in PL, boost revenue and squad value.
At least it will make the debt look more reasonable in relation to turnover.

Gibson is a legend who has made our club into a byword for administrative integrity and locally-oriented development. That this has led to reduced success in a competitive field over the past 15 years or so is no surprise: nobody has a right to success, and teams recruit the managers available and operate within the constraints dictated by revenues. I'm still proud of our club and that's largely down to Gibson.
My virtual bromance with him began to die however, when he made his famously arrogant "smash this league" comment, and was fatally wounded when he started backing Tories.
Because I'm a superstitious football fan, I just can' shake the feeling that our fortunes are somehow tied to Gibbo's taking the wrong ideological turn around that time. Carrick, in my mind, represents the first stage of a restoration: a modest, thoroughly decent young man, you can't imagine he shares the kind of un-progressive views you got with Warnock, say; you can't imagine Carrick votes Tory, thinks taking the knee is a p.c. outrage etc.
C'mon Steve, come home son. The Tories will never be your people, however rich you are.

“There can be no other objective – we want to smash the league next year. We want to go up next year as champions."

To this day, it baffles me that people took offence by this.

People heard what they wanted to hear and took it as a promise instead of a goal. We should have done better but the players we gambled on just weren’t good enough. It’s the risk you take.

I hope he never retires. If they take him out of the Riverside in a coffin I'll be paying my respects even if he didn't have a pot to **** in and the team were on the bottom rung of professional football. Without him, and his unfaltering will to play by the rules, we wouldn't have even that.

For pure sporting glory

Does anyone think Steve Gibson will sell the club if MFC is promoted this season?

No. But it would be the first time selling is an option. The debt has always ensured that there has not been even a rumour of a bid in all these years.

There were rumours around the time of the last promotion.

I think all of the big spenders have their eyes on bigger clubs than us anyway. I’d be very suspicious of any supposed billionaire owners being interested in our club. It would only be an investment and if we did become a premier league club, they would be looking to use us as a wealth generator either through a sale or by siphoning off some of the Premier League TV money.
