Those Middlesbrough players who 'want out' shouldn't play again this season - Dominic Shaw [Gazette]

* Arguably, there could be those whom Warnock and his staff feel dont fit the requirements and may be told they can go looking elsewhere in the near future?*

Warnock's QPR findings will become clear in the coming weeks - perhaps as early as Wednesday night at Rotherham

On Friday Neil Warnock told of his confidence that his players wouldn't be "on the beach" but in the opening stages against QPR Boro played with flip-flops on.

The first 20 minutes when they were given the runaround proved costly as Warnock's side slipped to another defeat in this grim run.

At least we're one game closer to the end of the season.

Afterwards, Warnock was as critical as he's been of his players. Earlier this season, the boss often said he won't criticise this group but the second half of the campaign has been nothing like he hoped for or expected.

The mood music has changed. Just a matter of weeks ago, Warnock was planning to put the finishing touches to a squad that he didn't think was far away. Now, he's talking about an overhaul.

In a strong press conference, Warnock did name names, but only of those who he pities. Who he feels deserve better than the way this season has petered out. Jonny Howson. Paddy McNair. Grant Hall. Duncan Watmore. You could add injured duo Dael Fry and Marcus Tavernier to the list.

He didn't reveal the identity of those who "want out" but perhaps evidence will be provided on teamsheets at Rotherham and beyond. If those players don't want to be here then they shouldn't be included. Play those who want to be here. Play those who are likely to still be here next season, who want to still be here next season.

Granted, Warnock is short on numbers and not helped by injuries, but including young players desperate to impress is surely better than those whose mind is elsewhere.

You'll have read, I'm sure, what Warnock told the written press. If not, that's HERE.

There was more of the same in his chat with BBC Tees post-match.

"We've got lads who don't want to here and I want to make sure I weed them out. That's easier said than done," he said.

"I can usually sort out a dressing room in 12 months but with contracts being what they are it's taken me a big longer. It's going to need a bit of work to sort it out even further."

Britt Assombalonga is one of those whose contract is up and Warnock has already confirmed he's leaving. With that in mind, then, it was strange that Assombalonga was the first - and only - striker introduced, especially considering Warnock said only a couple of weeks ago that his former captain was unlikely to play again for Boro if the other forwards are fit.

We're left to try and read between the lines as to who Warnock means when he's talking about those who want out.

That a season of such promise - and progress - is ending on this tone is disappointing.

Boro have played a lot worse this season than they did against QPR. OK, the start was awful, and ultimately that was what settled the game. But Warnock's side battled back and should have taken at least a point. The sending off, as ridiculous as it sounds, didn't help Boro's cause. When it was 11 vs 11 QPR were open and expensive and that meant Boro were able to create chances. When the visitors when down to 10, they suddenly shut up shop and Boro had to pick their way through.

It didn't help that Joe Lumley came on and had a Simon Eastwood, making two superb pointblank saves. But Boro weren't good enough, the story of the second half of the season.

A passage of play in the 95th minute summed things up for Boro. In the dying seconds they had bodies in the box but passed and passed and passed and failed to cross, eventually losing possession.

When the camera cut to boss Warnock in stoppage time, he cut an angry and deeply frustrated figure.

This, he later said, was useful in that he learnt a lot about his players and who needs to go.

His findings will become clear in the coming weeks - perhaps as early as Wednesday night at Rotherham.

Suggests that it is not just out of contract players. He said something on the interview after the match about a player probably on the phone to his agent now saying "get me out of here".

Who is it? Djed Spence ?

To my mind, if you have a core squad of

Djiksteel Hall Fry McNair Bola
Tavernier Morsy Howson Saville
Watmore Johnston

You're not far off.
Need a good keeper and striker
Then backup for positions

Wood, Fisher, Akpom, Browne and even Wing can be good backup

Neil, I am afraid I can’t agree with you. A lot of the players named have been involved to quite a degree this season. A season resulting in disappointment and failure to get to the playoffs. There is nothing to suggest anything will change with the core of players we hold.

Ship out the strikers, Spence and Coulson, keep most of the rest.

Though with Coulson it's more that I don't think he's good enough than any questions over his attitude.

We've missed Dijksteel and Fry particularly post Christmas, our early season defensive solidity being shot by these key absences. As ever we miss a hat full of chances, something which has been a problem for years. I personally think if all are fit, and that's a big if we are only a goalkeeper and big centre forward away from the play offs.....unfortunately they are key positions.

Really have we gained anything financially flogging Bamford and Randolph and replacing them with inferior players, when we could have mounted a serious promotion challenge these past 2 or 3 seasons with better recruitment and retention?

What have Bettinelli, Stojanovic, Saville, Akpom and Fisher added to what we already had and have coming through. For keeper we had Pearse, who is certainly no worse than Bettinelli or Archer. Up front Ty O'Neill, Johnson and Ste Walker could have covered our woeful forward purchases and loans (didn't think it was possible to get worse value than Fletcher or Britt, but with Akpom we seem to have managed it!). What does Saville offer that Tav or Wing don't and as for Darnell, seems a nice lad but was a reserve right back essential?

As for most of the loan players in the last three Januarys they maybe seemed good on paper, but results proved they made us worse and not were long term solutions! The reality of the last 3 years is we could have stuck with what we had and made a better fist of things, so I am not too optimistic when I hear the manager talk of big clear outs!

Ste Walker can't cut it in League One, he definitely can't do it in the Championship.

Given Spence is terrible, and Dijksteel has been out injured for half the season, I think it's clear that a reserve right back was an essential signing. Fisher cost next to nothing and has performed decently whilst here, he's been a good signing.

Akpom can't cut it in the Championship either and Fisher imho has performed poorly since his impressive debut man marking at Norwich !

He says all that and then brings on Britt a player who openly couldn’t care less over a young kid who is aching to be given a chance.

So sadly words are hollow when he does that.
He does contradict himself quite a lot Warnock, but he knows better than us. Maybe he wants to bring Coburn on in a game we’re not chasing?

which probably won’t happen this season!

Surely the question that needs to be asked is...Why don’t these players want to be here?
Is it the brand of football we play?
Good point. Would you get an honest answer from them? One thing is for sure, none will get a really decent club looking at them if based on the qualities shown for us- particularly since January

I’m guessing the players he is hinting at are:

- Spence... his attitude looks very poor and he isn’t a very good footballer either! If he can’t be sold a season loan might do both parties some good.
- Akpom... given Brit was the only striker introduced from the bench, Akpom must be an issue?... he won’t be easy to move on, who would want him!
- Fletcher... clearly he isn’t staying and wants out. Pretty easy as he is out of contract.
- Johnson... He was good first half of the season and perhaps is the only one who has a right to sulk a little, but I’m guessing he is on the list. Easy to move on mind as out of contract.

We are still seeing the fall out from Monks spending spree ! Howson apart cant see a success in there . But it started in premier league as well with the purchases of Rudy and that bloke from Watford ( so good I cant remember his name ) ,selling Bamford just's rubs salt into the wounds . Now a major rebuild looms with little or no money . With 5/6 out of contract and on the way out , this looks a pivotal time and could end up going either way . With Warnock only here for 1 more season it seems to suggest more questions than answers ! .Gibson and co needs to be awake and not asleep at the wheel as they appear to have been these last decade . Lets hope the QPR game was a watershed moment , goodbye Britt and co , you made a boat load of money and gave poor service .

and thats why dom shaw writes for a living and isnt managing a pro football club.

of course , he is entitled to his opinion, i just dont agree with it.

football opinions of this nature are (in my opinion - and i expect many to disagree with it) best kept for after 5 pints down the alehouse with your close mates, not as an editorial in the local sports rag.
and that's why you are writing on a message board and don't get paid for it.

I am sure Saville will be on Warnock's list too.
He dropped him, never mentions him and he's only playing as Warnock has so few options.
If he's not on the list above with Assombolonga, then he should be.

Well said

Get them out of our team, off our team's bench - and say they're welcome to look for another team immediately

TODAY PLEASE

Fill the bench with youngsters to get the matchday experience, start a couple and bring a couple on every game

I've said this again and again

I'm not full of hate for any individual like some - I just don't want to see them in my team any more.
