This week, I 'ave been mostly listening to

Scubahood

Well-known member
Forteresse - Crepuscule d'octobre
Oranssi Pazuzu - Valonielu
Misfits - American Psycho
Panopticon - Roads to the North
Abigor - Fractal Possession
Napalm Death - Enemies of the Music Business
Leviathan - Tentacles of Whorror
AC/DC - Flick of the Switch
SupaRed - SupaRed
Uada - Cult of a Dying Sun

Another quick week Scuba. I started off with your recommendations (nearly)

Gamma Ray - Land of the Free. Quite a good listen, there's elements of all sorts of NWOBHM/Priest etc as well as a bit of Queen and Wishbone ash on this album.
Candlemass - Candlemass. This is the best one you've recommended yet. It's like some prime unreleased material from my favourite band Black Sabbath. Sounds like a cross between Master of Reality and Mob Rules. Some brilliant riffs and tunes. I've got it on order (y)
Michael Kiske - City of Heroes. I couldn't find your recommendation, very limited choice on Spotify. Nothing special this one, quite formulaic power ballads and almost heavy metal pop (if that makes any sense :) )

Then these albums over the week

Frank Zappa - Zoot Allures
Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny
Brian Eno - Ambient 4: On Land
XTC - Skylarking
X-Ray Spex - Germfree Adolescents
Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy
Frank Zappa - Roxy & Elsewhere
Midnight Oil - Blue Sky Mining
David Bowie - Low
The Who - The Who by Numbers

Hi mate, thanks for the feedback!

I agree with most of what you've written there, interesting to see someone else's perspective and re Gamma Ray you seeing influences of those other bands which I'd have never even considered! You'll have it bang on no doubt as Kai (founder/singer/guitarist) is a huge fan of Priest and NWOBHM and also softer stuff like the other two. They've even got a Pet Shop Boys cover on one of their albums 🤣

Glad you enjoyed Candlemass, very underrated band outside of the metal scene, they've been on the go since the early 80s! But yes heavily influenced and inspired by Sabbath, they have a Sabbath cover medley on one of their early albums. They really carried on Sabbath's early sound and ran with it and hey presto, the subgenre doom metal was born! Good lyrical themes too 👍

Re the Kiske/Somerville album yeah I agree there, there are two or three really good songs (e.g. title track) but like you say the rest are pretty bland. It's only because Kiske is my favourite singer of all time so I enjoy pretty much anything he does 😍

You'll have to have a think of three for me now 😎

What streaming service do you use, I think you said you couldn't find quite a few things before.

Raised First - Ignoring the Guidelines
IDLES - Ultra Mono
Cannonball Adderley - Somethin' Else
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
Fugazi - 13 Songs

I'm a bit late getting back to you with some albums to try. Here you go :

Orange Goblin - Time Travelling Blues. A no brainer that you'll love this (if you haven't heard it already)

Midnight Oil - Blue Sky Mining. A massively under rated album, great songs and brilliant clean guitar tones.

Talking Heads - Remain in Light. A bit more of a departure from rock/heavy rock. Afrobeat meets New Wave meets Funkadelic. One of my favourite albums of all time.

Let me know what you think (y)

Love Janice Ian amongst others you chose. Went to see here in Leeds(wife and son went to Arc but I was offshore) and she was truly wonderful. Very funny, great songs and stories and even though she was mid sixties then her voice was amazing.

Caledonia Soul Music - Van Morrison
Paris, Texas - Ry Cooder
In Memory of Elizabeth Reed - The Allman Brothers (The live version, Fillmore East 1971)
Who Drank All The Whisky - John Martyn & Eddi Reeder ( Transatlantic Sessions )
Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues - Neil Young ( @ Bob Dylan’s 30th Anniversary Concert )
