21st February the mighty Boro, fresh from beating PL Liverpool in the semi final of the league cup & another appearence at wembley, were in no mood for letting their guard slip & allowing Sunderland, our challenges for one of the two promotion spots, catch us out
Marco Branca carried out where he left off on tuesday night with a brace, one an overhead goal & a strike from Alun Armstrong was enough to see the Boro triumph 3-1 & send our wearside neighbours home pointless, sending Boro top of the 1st division one point clear of Forest & 6 points clear of 3rd placed Sunderland
Magic man Merson was again instrumental for this victory, playing in a divison he is head & shoulders above proved yet again what an instrumental signing he was when Bryan Robson took him from Arsenal last summer & with the signing of Marco Branca this was a top, top duo, which Sunderland had no answer to
Michael Thomas, on loan from Liverpool, produced an excellent performance in the team
The vast majority of the 30,227 crowd went home buzzing & after a week when we, qualified for europe & beat one of our main challenges for promotion & neighbours to boot, they can feel right proud & content that we are on our way back
