This day 1991 Lennies 1st season at the Boro was building up to something special

Going really well in the 2nd divison, as well as the FAC & also the league cup when on this day we played Man City at Ayresome Park
Winning 2 goals to one & the 1st of our cup double over City that season

It was a strange game when the weather changed & you could hardly see the goals at either end, we were in the centre of the south stand so OK

Robbie Mustoe out us one up to double his goals account for the season & his 3rd Boro career league cup goal & reliable striker Paul Wilkinson for his 5th league Cup goal & 10 for the season

Lennies team

Stephen Pears
Curtis Fleming
Jimmy Phillips
Alan Kernaghan
Nicky Mohan
Robbie Mustoe
Bernie Slaven
Mark Proctor
Paul Wilkinson
Stuart Ripley
Jamie Pollock

Attendance - 17,286

Went to every home & away cup match that season & 90% of away games too

Was a strange game that one Erimus, due as you say to the thick fog that rolled in before kick- off. I was stood on the Holgate and as well as not being able to see anything beyond the halfway line, the fog also had the effect of muffling any noise so there was an eerie half silence around the ground. Every time play passed into the other half we were singing 'East Stand, where's the ball?'

It looked at one point like the ref might abandon the match but luckily it cleared up a bit for the second half and we inflicted the first of two cup defeats on 1st Division Man City that season.

Yes we knocked City out of both cups you can really feel the atmosphere in that game Erimus a night match at Ayresome I always enjoyed them. I remember city's goal well to, a good technique steering his header beyond Pears.
I went to Sheff Wed in the FA cup, not Portsmouth away mind, but the replay, I really fancied our chances, this was the Darren Anderton direct from a corner goal and we ended up well beaten?

The fantastic Man Utd semi final with Boro fans at their best (Bobby Charlton remarked he thought united were away such was the noise we made:))

It was a fantastic season topped off we had great but bewildering and emotional day at Wolves, what a celebration that night was.

Wilco was rarely missing for us, rarely injured, although always seemed a bit ungainly in his running he was a favourite of mine and found the net regularly. He was a good lad.

Home and away wins against the Magpies. too

Lennie had the gift of the gab, a good football man just listening to him talk. I always remember after one good beating we had he said" I can categorically say now that back 4 wont play together again" two games later they played together and we won and kept a clean sheet:)
Happy days.

Yes famous Lennie quotes, I was in the Newcastle end of boxing day, when Paul Wilkinson ran the full length of the pitch I was telling myself, don't jump if we score, don't jump with geordies in my saying saying, he'll miss he's useless,, bang, goaaaaaallll, how hard is it when your bursting inside & yelling goaaaaaallll, 👍

Lennie did a great job for us. I remember I wasn't overly keen when he was appointed but he did a fans question and answer session in the Central and he totally won me over. He was a great public speaker and he didn't duck any questions or spout any bulls**t. Sadly, he'll probably be largely forgotten in our history timeline.

You could be right, but what an impact when he came
1st off we swapped with Charlton Colin Walsh & Alan Walsh as loan's then go either way
Then we had LL coming to the Boro, Colin Walsh, who I liked & he scored against the Geordies, going back to Charlton & Alan Kernaghan coming back to the Boro

I still have a beer mat which Lennie signed to my one year old daughter 🍻👍

One of my favourite seasons as a boro supporter. Away win at SJP, 17 second goal against Sunderland, last day drama/promotion, 2 cup runs including a semi final at OT, 2 wins over Man City and a win away at Sheff Wed

Entertaining football, 2 decent wingers in Ripley and Hendrie supplying the crosses for Bernie and Wilko to put the ball in the net

I was the only Boro fan in a hospitality box right on the half way line - it was an all lads event and we'd had loads of beer.
It was an interesting 10 seconds or so when he got that ball on the half way line.

I don't think he'll be forgotten. All of our promotion winning managers are legends for ever
