This day 1990 - woke up on the morning with my stomach in knots, why do the Boro put us through this time & time again

5th May, win this game against our arch rivals Newcastle, which could stop them winning automatic promotion but could, if results go against us, see us relegated back to the 3rd division we left 3 years previous

When the mighty Boro fall, they fall, from winning 2 consecutive promotions & a place in the 1st division which we looked comfortable uptil January 1989 when winless matches seen us plummet down the league, relegated on the final game of the season & our return back in the 2bd division is another season of struggle when again, 2 seasons running our final game has to be won

Our previous fixture v Barnsley on the Tuesday night resulted in a 1-0 home defeat, putting the mighty Boro 2nd bottom & facing odds on relegation against high flying Newcastle

Roger Thames covered the match on St & Greavsie show, I still have it on a video, when he's reviewing the upcoming match & finishes off, ' If there's more than 40 miles difference between the 2 sides at the end of the game, it'll be 2 division, well Roger, you were wrong

Memories of the game

We were in chicken run next to the away fans , of all the games at Ayresome Park this had to be one of the best atmospheres I ever experienced . Watched the video a while back and some of the shell suits on view are amazing .

Mibe & my dad's season tickets were bang on the half way line in the south stand
Half way through the 2nd half tge holgate sung C'mon Boro & then other areas started singing Boro, Boro, Boro, Boro, at that point it was spine tingling stuff

I think this is my favourite ever game against the Mags. Not because of the quality of the game but what was at stake. They came here expecting a walk in the park and went home with their tails between their legs.

I also had a season ticket in the South Stand just off the half way line. The atmosphere was tense but electrifying at times and the stomping and clapping on the wooden boards sounded great.

Was that game when Bird was wasting time and a Newcastle player came into clatter him. Bird then gestured the donkeys ears at him?

We were all obviously in the Chicken Run that day. I didn't normally go in there, but for some reason was in there and also found one of my brothers in there.

I think the Geordies had all the East End.

We were going to be relegated at half time - then we scored 4 goals in the second half and Leeds scored at Bournemouth.

Two quick goals for us caused pandemonium and for once the Chicken run was all positive. All the frustrations of that season were suddenly washed away down the Tees and into the North Sea.

It doesn't come better than that we stayed up and we kept the Geordies down.

Happy Days

Yes, the player in question was Kevin Scott

Yes right up there as one of the big games from AP 👍

Newcastle fans were housed in the corner away end, they didn't get that many tickets, IIRC

Yes, you are both right, just seen the video.

Maybe we thought the Holgate would be full, so went into the infamous Chicken Run.

I remember us in the Holgate singing 4-1 4-1 4-1 and then it changed to Boro Boro Boro (same tune) with the rest of the ground. Spine tingling is the right word.
