As we hosted Portsmouth at Ayresome Park in a 2nd division game we had to win, with points needed to drag ourselves away from the bottom end of the league, also players were putting themselves in Bruce Rioch plans for a mouth watering Zenith data systems Northern final 2nd leg v Villa

Trevor Putney was to play his final league game v Portsmouth due to horrible injury in the mentioned upcoming Villa game
Bruce gave a full league debut to Owen McGee, having worn the No12 shirt away to Sheff Utd & coming off the bench to replace Mark Brennan, this day he wore the No3 shirt replacing Colin Cooper, the other debutant & at No9 was the excellent signing Ian Baird signed from Leeds a few days earlier

The game itself seen 2 Boro old boys to score the goals to win 3 vital points

Paul Kerr with his only goal of the season & Bernie with his 13th to day, infront of 15,295

As well as a welcome 3 points its a massive boast for Tuesday nights massive "Wembley here we come"
