2nd May, Tuesday night fixture at Ayresome Park, win the match & it'll go a long way to us staying up, with 2 defeats & a draw since our last win
The time to win points to guarantee 2nd division survival was running out pretty fast, 2 games to go, both at home with the last one Newcastle, would we like to finish off the season hoping to beat our neighbours or worse, see us relegated at home by them, no we need to win the Barnsley game 1st, put a bit of a breathing space between us & the other teams around us

17,015 were hoping to see the mighty Boro put on a performance & get 3 points........
Unfortunately it wasn't to be, Barnsley came & done a job on us, taking all 3 points back to South Yorkshire & us sitting 2nd bottom in the table & facing the anguish of trying to salvage something against Newcastle with the sobering thought that even if we win 100 - 0, if Leeds lose at Bournemouth we will be back in the 3rd division, 3 years after leaving that division

One good thing after that game Peter Davenport made his final appearance before moving to Sunderland in July

People complain about some of the underperforming current players, but that team had 4 England international squad players + 2 irish internationals, along with a couple of other England U21 players - that is underperforming !!- well at least until the Saturday when they all become instant heroes (-not Davenport obviously)

That was just the prequel to one of the greatest games at Ayresome, and almost perfect overall outcome to the season.

Humping the Geordies 4-1, Leeds do us a favour, we stay up, and the Geordies stay down, who then go to lose in the play offs, to Sunderland who then lose to Swindon in the final..just a pity that Swindon (soon to be renamed Swindle Town) had to give the Mackems their spot in the top division due to financial irregularities.

Got home from the Barnsley game down in the dumps fearing a succesive relegation.In the middle of the night my wife's waters burst and my daughter was born 30 years ago today then we go and hammer Newcastle to turn it into one of the happiest weeks of my life.
