This day 1989 all the shops around Ayresome Park ran out of Mars bars

As it seemed to get in to the ground you had to have one on you, though they wern't to eat but to bombard Gazza when he came on for their pre match warm ups & he did get bombarded
I think he made a joke of it at 1st by pick the odd one up, tearing the wrapper off & taking a bite, think he got fed up in the end

The match irself seen one of the best displays from an opposition I'd seen when Waddle tortured us throughout the game, we couldn't get near him, thankfully his, teammates, Gazza included, wern't on the seme level as him that day, Gazza was subbed in the 2nd half as with the terrace taunts he was getting a bit hot headed & subbed

Boro hung in there to get a credible 2-2 draw, with Colin Cooper doubling his seasons & Stuart Ripley scoring his 3rd of the season
January was an excellent month, FAC apart, for the mighty Boro, taking 7 points from a possible 9

Unfortunately that was the best months points total we took for the remainder of the season, if we had took the same points in another month we'd have stayed up, which IMHO we should have

Bruce's team

Stephen Pears
Gary Parkinson
Colin Cooper
Tony Mowbray
Gary Hamilton
Gary Pallister
Bernie Slaven
Mark Brennan
Paul Kerr
Peter Davenport
Stuart Ripley
Mark Burke

Attendance - 23,692

Enjoyed that

Still say that Waddle, that day, gave the best performance I've ever seen 'live' by a footie player.
Everything he tried came off and we couldn't touch him.

On a similar theme to 'mars bars' was it the same season, or thereabouts that Tony Adams was pelted with carrots (donkey reference)?
In my minds eye the two games were very close.

I remember a bloke outside the Holgate entrance (Clive Road) with a big hessian bag of vegetables offering them to boro fans going in.
Be interesting to hear if anyone else remembers this happening - and even if he posts on here!

Sure it was yes

Agree Waddle was awesome that, as good as anything I've seen also, as I mentioned, lucky for us his team mates wern't on the same level

Two things I remember to this day. Looking gormless at the lass at the kiosk in the Holgate, when she asked me what I wanted a Mars bar for, and waddle being awesome. Great game.

My recollection is the first time he came near the 18 yard box, I think to take a corner, & the air went black with all the mars bars being chucked at him. He did pick one up & take a bite, to cheers from the Holgate.

Also when the chants of "You fat b*****d" were going strong, he went & stood next to Gary Hamilton and rubbed his belly going 'he's fatter than me'.

I remember the fun we had taunting Gazza. My mate took a couple of Mars bars as ammunition but his aim was a bit off - some poor bloke at the front of the Holgate got the first one in the back of the neck.

There were 2 things I remember about the mars bars and carrots. The ball boy in front of the Holgate when he came back out for the 2nd half chucking a load of the Mars bars back into the crowd so there were 2 goes at getting Gazza (he did play along well though). With the carrots the only player I remember getting hit was Mogga he had a couple bounce right on his head.

The coins at Man U game were less funny though that season.

The other disappointing result about that time was Simod Cup v Palace where we went 2-1 up late on and managed to lose 3-2. I was convinced we were going to Wembley that year.

Me too, I was gutted coming home from Ayresome Park & after a wonder strike from Colin Cooper putting us 2-1 up

Just remembered how bad Gazza's performance was that day.
He seemed to go along with the 'you fat pastie' (a clean version of the chant that I used to explain when first taking my young sons to the game :) ).
But the longer the game went on the more irritated he seemed to get.
Not sure if he got subbed off even?
It felt as if we fans had played a part in is poor performance(y)
Given Waddle's majestic performance we did very well to get a point.
