In the 1st leg playoff final, 25th of May seen us face Chelsea at Ayresome Park after they disposed of Blackburn, 6-1 on aggregate, winning 2-0 at Ewood Park & 4-1 at Stamford Bridge & we knocked out Bradford City
Chelea had finished 4th bottom, above the 3 teams who were relegated but back then the 4th bottom team played the top 3 in the 2nd division, Chelsea failed to beat Charlton at home on the final game of the season, drawing 1-1 so West Ham & Charlton had finished level on points but a better GD so escaped the agony of the playoffs by the skin of their teeth
But the mighty Boro were a different proposition back then to Blackburn, the Boro were on a crest of a wave & brushed Chelsea aside at home 2-0 with goals from Trevor Senior, his final Boro goal & a great crossfield ball to Bernie Slaven for the 2nd goal, infront of 25,531 fans
