2nd May, a car load of us travelled down to Chester for this fixture in a Ford Capri
One defeat since losing at Walsall 1-0, which was an impressive record, 7 wins & 2 draws, winning 5 on the bounce, it was so tight for automatic places, Swindon, Bournemouth & Gillingham chasing 2 places
Going back to our last defeat, which being Walsall on the 14th March, following the defeat Bruce with another of his moving speeches said, we started the season unbeaten in the first 12 games, let's go one better

Boro continued their impressive run & followed Riochs speech to the letter with a, 2-1 win at Sealand Road, with goals from Tony Mowbrays 7th of the season & Gary Hamiltons 5th of the season

Bruce's team

Stephen Pears
Gary Hamilton
Colin Cooper
Tony Mowbray
Gary Parkinson
Gary Pallister
Bernie Slaven
Archie Stephens
Lee Turnbull
Paul Kerr
Stuart Ripley

I was at that game(and Walsall).Went in the seats which was just as well as I seem to recall it pouring down during the game and the Boro fans behind the goal (after getting a soaking) being allowed into a covered stand opposite us.Although it may be my memory playing tricks on me,it was a long time ago!

I drove a mini bus full of us to this game and was stopped by a policeman at the turnstiles for smelling of drink. The Bobby asked if I had been drinking and how much had I had to drink and said he could refuse me entry. In the driver, was my reply, you should see the others.

When it started raining everyone ran from behind the open end behind the goal to the side where there was some cover 😁 I still have a picture of me an my brother stood on a bridge over the canal there - remember Hammo’s winner clear as day ✔️

🐔

Yes it rained after the game started and I got wet on the open terrace - Hammy's goal just crossed the line after coming down off the underside of the bar.

To me we missed Brian Laws and went through a blip, but starting pulling out after a win at Blackpool. I thought Gary Gill struggled a bit. It looks like we played an extra forward at Chester (Turnbull).

My only ever visit to Chester's ground.

Did you get in?

We went in the seats v Walsall, sat next to their top striker Kelly who moved to Newcastle in the summer

One of the lads in our minibus got nicked. He had the key. When he got released he had lost it. So four of us got a black cab home (£110), the lad who had made the booking got the spare key from the hire company and returned with the cab to drive the bus and the stragglers home.

Great memories 👍

My first away match Chester 2 v Boro 5. 26th Nov 1966
John O'Rourke hat trick Big John Derek Downing
went with my mate by train with a special "match ticket" 15 shillings return Marske to Chester.
You had to travel on specific trains which included changes at York Manchester Staleybridge and Crewe. OK on the way there but had to wait 4 hours on Crewe station on the way back. Got back to Marske Sunday afternoon.
Great game thought every away game would be like that. 66-67 second favourite season

WindyNook, you will have seen history made, Frank Spraggon was named No12, our 1st FAC sub, he, for whatever reason, replaced hat trick hero John O'Rourke

We were playing Olè football by then although that chant wasn't around.
next round it took 3 games to beat York the last one at St James Park
21,000 crowd F A cup a big draw then
Before we were dumped out by Mansfield 2-0 in the 3rd round.
17,000 there at least 10,000 Boro
Went by special train to that one and as you all know Mansfield didn't have a station then. We were put on coaches from Nottingham. Ah happy days

A MKIII I hope Erimus 0-0:)

I was on the Eaterside minibus that day. It just about made it there :ROFLMAO:

Was the first time I'd heard the chant "Beer, beer, we want more beer. All the lad are cheerin' get the ********* beer in"

The look on the local plods faces was priceless

This was revenge for them coming to Ayresome Park and coming away with an unexpected 2-1 win earlier that season.

I remember being impressed by a black lad they had in an attacking midfield role, who on that day tore us apart - can’t remember his name though.

Erimus, do you have the Chester team line up for that day?

Yes, but i'm unable to get the programme yet, will post when I do (y)

I recall this - a bank holiday weekend (May Day weekend) . It was a great day out - it was the second wettest game of the season behind the torrents that fell on us at Newport that season. And both games featured Mowbray goals! He liked the wet weather did Tony

I just looked for my programme. I cant find it. It must have got so wet it didn't survive!

I remember staying near Northwich that weekend and had a Chinese meal in the town centre. I also think Stuart Rimmer scored Chesters goal - he was a club stalwart
