7th February seen Graham Hedley a Sunderland fan & exciting Boro prospect scored the only goal of the game to keep the points on Teesside & another double over our rivals
Trouble outside before the game, in the ground & after, as the mighty Boro, who have had an indifferent start to the year with 2 defeats & 2 wins in the league & progression to the 4th round of the FAC

An attendance of 35,065 seen Graham Hedley float the ball over the wall in to the back of Sunderlands net to the delight of the holgate
With minutes remaining Sunderlands full back Joe Bolton received his marching orders

John Neals Boro had met Sunderland 4 times during his reign, knocking them out of the league Cup in 77 & the double over them in 80-81, unfortunately this was to be his final Boro v Sunderland fixture

John Neals team

Jim Platt
Irving Nattrass
Ian Bailey
Graham Hedley
Billy Ashcroft
Tony McAndrew
Terry Cochrane

This match was strange for me. I went with a bus load of mackams from Wingate - they all knew i was the only Boro fan in the village but it was a close drinking group in the village no no hassle . Got of the bus and went into a sammy Smiths working mens club amongst the terraced streets outside Ayresome - all was well in there as we left got chased down the street till we got to the Clive Road Corner where the mackams were and yes i went in with my mates. When Hedley scored the free kick I smirked and my mates all looked at me ... kept there gobs shut . Was I brave or foolish hahahaa never did it again.... agrgo all the way back to the bus

Good memories Alan 👍

I was in the east end/Clive Ed corner with the Sunderland fans for a pre-season game in the mid 70’s (it was cheaper) when we scored I forgot where I was and jumped around, looked behind me and saw about 39 skinheads charging down towards me thankfully, got escorted out and shot in the Holgate

That alley behind Charlie Amer's Sport Centre was like a battlefield at 2.30pm that afternoon - it can be quite scary because it was so enclosed and quite long.

we were chased down the warwick street ( gates) enterance turned left passed the boys end and into the corner end .... kicked all the way through by my own fans hahahaha - very sureal

What a thread!

A Boro fan taking a kicking under cover as a Mackem because he lived among them and another in their end because it was cheaper!

In fairness to all the Mackems I know they all have a story about Ayresome Park, I think we are their guilty pleasure...

Good crowd at that match although Hedley never really lived up to his potential in my opinion.

Some quality in that Boro side though, no doubt about that.
