This day 1979

Erimus74

Well-known member
Bosco Jankovic signed for the mighty Boro

On the 24th February John Neal Yugoslavian team Zeljeznicar £110k for his services
17th March 1979, Bosco wore the No12 shirt for his debut away to Bristol City, replacing Micky Burns in the 2nd half, scoring his 1st goal away to Derby in a 3-0 win on the 5th May 79, scoring his 1st home goal v Derby in the league Cup 2nd leg on the 4th September 1979
Loved by Villa fans, not so by Ipswich fans he went on to make 52 starts, 10 sub appearences for the mighty Boro, scoring 18 goals
IMHO, he never fulfilled his true potential, in some games he was awesome
He was released in the summer of 81

I think John Neals Chelsea tried to sign him a few years later but Boro still held his registration so wanted money & the transfer never happened

Enjoyed watching him play - just read he died of natural causes at the age of 42. Blimey

Oh was it natural causes? I have always had this thought that he was killed during the conflict in the Balkans.

I am sure he played for a French team after us Erimus74, so surely we couldn’t have held his registration? Unless the rules were different back then of course.

I loved Bosco, but he was frustrating as well as a genius at times. Scored some corking goals, Norwich springs to mind

Ta. That has brought back some memories....

Here is a bit of my history watching Bosco. I went to uni in London from 1977 to 1980. I met my future first wife there in 1978. We went together to the following match as she was a Spurs supporter:

18.08.1979
Middlesbrough took the points with a three goal burst within 20 minutes to shock Spurs at White Hart Lane.

David Armstrong, Micky Burns and Bosco Jankovic put Boro into an unassailable lead, but Glenn Hoddle did pull one goal back with a classy finish.

Attendance : - 32,743

I nearly got injured by the Spurs fans at the match. I was in the Spurs end. I jumped up and celebrated automatically when we scored the first goal. After that I had to watch the rest of the goals, including the one from Bosco, without celebrating in any way.

Another more recent memory is that my current wife is a Brighton supporter. She was with me at the promotion match at the Boro in 2016. Sadly this match is associated with bad memories as well as good ones. As we were back over in the UK visiting one of my older brothers. Who was being treated for cancer at the time. He died before we were relegated the following season.

I thought that too coluka until I read Boscos profile in Middlesbrough complete record saying that John Neal, another excellent Boro manager, tried to sign Bosco from Metz
