This day 1975 I went to my 1st top flight away game

When on the 1st February our dad took both me & my younger brother to SJP for the 1st top flight meeting between both teams since boxing day 1953, when the mighty Boro won 3-2
We had to buy another match ticket with our dad only buying 2 & on the day asking my younger brother, who was 11, if he wanted to go, which he did

We travelled to Newcastle, 2nd in the table after losing our last away game at Ipswich 2-0 when both teams were joint top

There were hundreds of Boro in the away end, but as the teams came out there were just as many Newcastle fans there too, as tickets were available at the outside ticket kiosk, where our dad bought a ticket & scuffles broke out between rivals fans leading up to KO
The police came in & sort of tried to seperate the fans but when John Hickton smashed in an unstoppable shot from 25 yards for his 6th goal of the season to put us in front a few scuffles again broke out, this was all new to a 13 year old seeing blokes belt each other, scary stuff indeed
Me & my brother got seperate in this vast open terrace from our dad
HT, we were leading 1-0 but 2 goals conceded in the 2nd half end result our 6th away defeat of the season
With about 5 minutes to go & as you looked over the wall to the street outside you could see hundreds of Newcastle fans milling about waiting for unfortunate Boro fans when our dad said to us C'mon kids let's go, as we started walking down the steps loads of geordies we running up, glad I was getting outta there

Thankfully my Dad took me into the seats to the right of the gallowgate, but we could see the trouble. The police were very poor in sorting it out.
Good to see the crowd errupt when we score...destroys the myth that Boro never took numbers to SJP in the 70's.
