2nd of February seen the mighty Boro suffer a heavy 5-1 defeat at Nottm Forest in this 2nd division clash
The Boro had been knocked out of the FAC 4th round 1-0 at John Neals 3rd division Wrexham a week previous & the 1st time that season we had lost 2 on the bounce, had we been found out, will we bounce back, the answer was a big resounding yes, Jack Charlton gathered his team, after following a goalless draw at home the Boro went out & battered all before them for the remainder of the season, apart from a few defeats after promotion was confirmed

The Boro drew the previous 4 away league games upto the Forest game, we won our last away game at Oxford 2-0 on the 10th November, maybe the Forest game was a big wake up call that although we looked formidable we had to impose ourselves away from home
Forest had 5 shots at goal & scored everyone, Alan Foggon scored our consolation goal

Big Jacks team

Graeme Souness
Stuey Boam

England lost to Scotland at Rugby too that day with a last minute kick. I still remember feeling shell shocked.

We were good defensively up to then.

We were still were promoted by March 17th?

It was the first time my dad wanted to leave a game early. Always recall after our Wrexham defeat we were pretty edgy and things at that time looked rocky. How we shouldnt have doubted them!!

Duncan McKenzie was awesome for them in that game, iirc. The home game against them in December was the coldest I'd ever been at AP.
Stuey Boam scored at the holgate end & it turned out to be the next time we beat em in the league was 1999 a last minute Brian Dean goal in a 2-1 win at the City Ground

Was at University in Scotland then, remember the rugby game - watched it in a common room with a majority of the home fans, just as Andy Irvine started his run to score from the final kick of the game one of my class mates stood up and switched the telly off saying "I think we've seen enough for today". When the telly warmed back up it was all over. Can't understand how he escaped a lynching.

I remember that there was some fun and games with the Forest "fans" before, during and after that match
