As the mighty Boro went down 5-3 at Cardiff in a winner stays up games

CH Dicky Rooks scored his only Boro hattrick, he became the 36th different Boro player to score a treble, probably his only career hattrick, our 25th away hattrick & 101st in total

Boro relegated to the third division for the 1st time in our history
Stan Anderson was unable to halt our slide to relegation

Nice one Erimus. The line up changed somewhat the next season - arrival of Hickton, Chadwick, O'Rourke, Whigham, and others Butler (from the Juniors) . No doubt I've missed a couple.

A couple of names there who I don't recognise- Ian Davidson and Ian Givson. And was Gordon Jones really playing left wing?
Mind you- I didn't even know Boro existed till the following season. If memory serves me right ( and these days it is more often not than it is), I saw a headline on the back page of the Gazette saying Jim Irvine had to have an operation for a cartlage injury. I can't remember him playing in the Third Division for us so perhaps he was transferred or the cartilage injury cut short his career

I met Ian Gibson when I took my son to a match in the legends, IG was Bernies speaking guest, I got talking to him at the beginning & at the end of the game

A month, or so later I was at another game in the legends & he came over & sat with me, we had a nice chat, what a lovely man, I have a great photo of the two of us

I was at that game. My Dad took me on a bus from the Teesside Bridge club .I dont think I was sure what relegation meant at the time as I was 8.I was a bit narked when Ian Gibson left.
I do remember the next season as if it happened yesterday. The arrival of my all time hero Big John and my first experience of what it was like to go up and being with my Dad throughout it all. Memories that easily bring me to tears.
No wonder I love this club it has been a huge part of my life.

Aaahh Ian GIBSON, not Givson-. yes I remember reading on the back page of the Gazette that he had been transferred to Coventry- I never saw him play though. But who was Ian Davison

Blf- I agree- the following season was when I lost my Boro virginity. I remember arranging to meet a schoolmate at Albert park gates near the swings etc. He never turned up so I went to the match on my own. Scunthorpe were the opponents. Boys End 1s 6d (I think) and even though I was on my own it was magic. The thrill went I got to the top of the steps and saw a swathe of green. The smell of stale beer, cigarette smoke, pee, and body odour was a right mixture for a 12 year old. Boro won 2-1 and had 2 goals disallowed for something called offside. 9Even today I don't understand it, but there again, neither does anyone else) I can name the whole team for that season, Whigham, Chadwick, Downing, Horsefield, O'Rourke, Rooks and of course Big John. Happy memories

Great memories Trug, I don't know my 1st home game, asked my dad many times & he wasn't one for stats, dates etc, yet me & my younger brother grew up talking stats

I remember my 1st cup match 18th January 1972 v Man City but not the league game a few months earlier

Yeah- it's funny how memory works. I can;t remember my first cup match. I remember being broken hearted when Mansfield beat us 2-0 at Field Mill after we had already beaten them 5-4 their in the league. (In the return at AP we beat them 1-0 with an OG by d*ck Edwards). At 12 years old I honestly thought that we would win the cup.

Dicky Rooks, our penalty taker at the time, he lost that to a new signing the following season 👍

What I remember about the game was Tyne Tees kept flashing updated scores from the game. Couldn’t believe the score. Bad night but a rebirth of the club the next season

Ian Davidson was bought from Preston what was called a wing half in those days. Tall and nasing and only average at best

Ian Gibson was a very good player and was the heartbeat of that team. DAvidson was a bit of a plodder to be honest. I never rated Jim Irvine very highly and the defence left a bit to be desired. Bob Appleby could only make so many good saves.

Was it the following year that O'rourke and Horsefield scored about 60 goal between them when they got going. I seem to remember we had a disastrous start to the season then we clicked one day away at Donny and wone 4-0 away and away we went
