Has he bags his 2nd Boro career hattrick, becoming the 32nd different Boro player to acheive this, it was our 65th hattrick at AP & 85th in total as the mighty Boro ran out 5-1 winners over Grimsby Town, taking quick revenge over Grimsby who beat us 4-1 only 3 days previous, this was Brian Cloughs 37th league goal of the season, remarkable record, he finished with 40 league goals from 40 league games, but he was no John Hickton ;)

Alan Peacock scored our 4th goal, his 13th of the season & Bill Harris, our excellent penalty taker, scoring the 5th when putting away his 3rd penalty of the season, becoming the 36th different Boro player to score from the spot, when converting our 173rd penalty in league history

Brian Clough went on to score 11 hattricks, 5 different games when he bagged 4 goals & 5 in one game, Brightons 1st ever 2nd division match

I was at the Brighton game. That was some result. It's 62/3 years ago now and my recollection is not as clear as it once was but I didn't think Brighton were that bad a side we just seemed to score every time we had a serious attack.

Now then "74" Clough scored 5 goals again - does that show up in your record system ?

Hi Rishworthian, a long time ago yes,

He also scored 3 in the away game at Brighton later in the season, we win 6-4

No, I've only got him scoring 5 in one game in his Boro career, the 6th & last Boro player to do so

Do you say he scored another 5 in a Boro game

Not really ......................... but it was while at the Boro

His first representative game was for the Football League and it was for them that he got a 5 goal haul. We beat the League of Ireland 5-0

Thanks for that

I've just looked through my book & never knew that, he scored all 5 at Windsor Park on the 23rd September 1959 v the Irish League in a 5-0 win

Not too sure that it was mentioned the score against Brighton was 9-0 having been 5-0 half time if I remember correctly. Norwich had 5-0 at the halfway mark last night, but managed only a measly 7. I was at that game too and it was surely the best start ever to a season. A pity that our poor, dodgy defence didn't allow Clough a proper shot at the First Division.

He went on record as saying so much didn't he

It was a massive shame with him, Peacock, Bill Harris, Delaphena that we couldn't have managed a shot at the top 2 places of the 2nd division

Well there were a few players then who, shall we say, weren't playing 'within the spirit of the game' weren't there?
Yea I can understand that but the players we did have that were head & shoulders above 90% of the rest in the division, must have been enough to mount a serious challenge, the best we achieved with Clough was 5th twice

Well, well, well I'd have sworn blind that we got a 3rd and a 4th but I have no doubt that you are right. Time dims the memory

As for players above the rest of the division - well there was Clough, Peacock and Halliday who all played for England Bill Harris was a regular for Wales. I don't think McLean or Day got any representative honours and the defence definitely didn't !

We had a particularly good start one season with a guy we'd just signed form Spurs ( Ernie Whalley ?) He got knacked after half a dozen, maybe 10 games and never really played again. He was very clearly "the missing link"

I've some Charlie Buchan footie books somewhere - might give me a clue

The game before my Boro debut.
12 th April 1958 Boro 2 Blackburn Rovers 3
Bet you can't guess who scored the Boro's 2 goals
Me Dad got me in for a Squeeze into the Chicken Run.
The crowd was over 31 thousand.
We also went to the last game where Boro were beaten 3-1 by West Ham.
Blackburn and West Ham were promoted that season.
CLoughie eventually got sick of scoring goals at one end only for them to be let in at the other.
Wonder what size crowds we would have got it we did get promoted?

In BC time at the Boro we finished, 55-56 14th, 56-57 6th, 57-58 7th, 58-59 13th, 59-60 5th & 60-61 5th

In his second representative game he didn't score all the goals. I remember the strange feeling of amazement. He might well have not scored any

As I've said before I used to go to Ayresome Park on a Saturday afternoon to see how many he would score, not if he would score

Yes it must have been amazing back then knowing at least we're gunna score today

Blackburn were particularly good at that time - the Clayton Brothers and Bryan Douglas seem to be the outstanding players for them

That West Ham side were awesome and completely outplayed us

A season or two before that sheffield Wednesday had been a similar side on a different planet to us. they had a lad called Quixall playing for them. He used ballet in training but he scored in the bob end - keeper never moved ( Ugolini ?)

Ernest Whalley, LH, 8 games, zero goals, season 1958-59

Aye He played against Brighton and the prog has his autograph on it. Oddly the centre forward for Brighton was a Sexton - I presume Dave Sexton I presume therefore we had a blistering start to the 58-59 season

and the keeper against Sheffield Wednesday was Ugolini

perhaps I'm not completely senile yet

Certainly not, great memories & lovely to look back on & rekindle the past, good times for you, cheers

Just looking through my book, Brian Clough played in two football league representatives games, scoring in a 1-1 draw at Ibrox in 58 & as mentioned, all 5 in a 5-0 win over the Irish league in 59, he earlier played for the FA XI v the Army in 57 scoring 5 goals in a 6-3 win & England B team v Scotland, scored a goal in a 4-1 win at St Andrews

Never played for the England youth
