At Ayresome Park in a 1st division fixture, running out 9-2 winners, as manager Will Gillow builds a team to challenge the best in the country & dare I say it, be crowned 1st division champions 1939-40 season

Wilf Mannion bagged 4, the 17th time a player had scored 4 in one game, Micky Fenton scored a hattrick, his 5th Boro hattrick & 49th at AP & 65 th in total hattricks sice becoming a football league club

First division champions? Really?
 
Everyone documented at the time that that young side was so good, we would've surely won the title but for the war. Thought everyone knew that.

Yes why

We finished
1936-37 we finished 7th
1937-38 we finished 5th
1938-39 we finished 4th

Why cant we believe, given our previous 3 seasons manager Will Gillow couldnt build a team to challenge the best in the country & dare I say it, be crowned 1st division champions 1939-40 season
