There were also some massive crowds at Ayresome in the late 30’s so won’t have been lack of interest either, maybe skint?

1933 and 1934 were very grim years economically - I haven't got the figures but I would guess there was around 33% male unemployment on Teesside.

Those that were working were worried about losing their jobs and there was no welfare state.
