Our FAC run started with a 2nd round 2-1 win away to Gainsborough Trinity, Thompson & Wilson scoring our goals, the 3rd round we beat Grimsby Town 2-1 at Linthorpe road with goals from, Pickstock & Borrie, round 4 seen the mighty Boro a bye to round 5 when we travelled to Redcar, unfortuantly this is where our run ended with Pickstock scoring our consolation goal in a 2-1 defeat

5th round been the furthest we've gone in the competition so far

Small Heath Alliance now Birmingham City beat Redcar in the quarter finals. Just reading a great book about Redcar's footballing history and thats mentioned a lot.

Madness theyd reached the same stage of the FA Cup as us until 1997.

It's amazing that a town the size of Redcar has never had a decent football team since then. Apologies to Redcar Athletic but 16th in Northern league means they have some way to go. You would have thought there would have been some success over the years.
If you compare it to Marske's recent history there is still some way to go.

The second time Boro won a national competition the Amateur Cup it was Thornaby they beat in the semi finals and in those days there wasn't such a massive difference between the standards in FA Cup and Amateur cup.

Eston got to the final in 1912 and South Bank won it the year after, before losing in final in 1922 but the gap had widened between the two competitions by then. Still fantastic achievements by small local towns

Can you please tell me what the book is called, and where to get it.

Who knocked Redcar out of the quarter final? Crazy to think they were only wins from an FA Cup final :)
Sounds incredible and romantic. As football was in those days played by working class locals. Every side barring two got byes for some reason in the 4th round. In the quarter finals in addition to Redcar you had Swifts, a team from Slough and even crazier a club called South Shore. They were a team from Blackpool and rivals to their neighbours Blackpool FC. Swifts from Slough got to the semis!

The reason for these unusual sounding teams doing so well then is because everybody just played for their local teams. There was no incentive to play for teams further away as you had to walk to match in all probability (except the away games in national comps obviously)

Exactly why the FA Cup was the best competition in the world for a 100 years. The romanticism of boyhood dreams becoming reality.

Marske won yesterday , looking good. Only formed in the mid-50's I believe. Local football in the area seems to be quite strong. How are the rugby teams doing?
