This day 16 years ago us Boro thought we would never see

Well I know I thought that

I can still remember when I started work as a 17 year old back in 1977 & going on in our works cabin about how good the Boro were & watch us this season under John Neal, we'll finish high up the league & win the FAC
One of the older lads then said to me, I'll bet you whatever, the Boro will not win anything before your 21st, so I took him up on it, though to be honest, we both knew that within 12 months we wouldnt be working together, but anyway, I was convinced we were on the verge of greatness after riding high with big Jack's team

Well needless to say, he was right, we came close a few times & those words I heard throughout my life & never thought would be the case, until one day I realised yep, that's going to be the case forever with the Boro, the old timers would always say, 'Listen son, the Boro will always let you down in the 11th hour'& they were right, until...............................................................
Cup runs came & went, renewed hope came & went & then, the impossible finally happened, against one of the best teams in the PL, we beat Arsenal over two legs in the semi final, we very rarely win at Arsenal & now, we're in the Carling Cup final

On this day, the 29th of February, there were only 2 people I wanted to be with 'when' we lifted a major trophy, my dad & my younger brother, we started out together in late 71 me & my brother in the boys end, our dad in the Bob end & fingers & toes crossed we'll see the mighty Boro triumph together

Without going in to the agonies of the remaining minutes after Schwarzer dropped a howler, then produced a magnificent display, we won our 1st ever trophy (though for me it will always be the Anglo Scottish Cup)

Just think some of the great Boro fans who wern't with us on this glorious day, Cliff Mitchell the sports writer, Willie Maddren to name two

Me, my dad & brother, together we witnessed triumph & heartache, promotions, relegation, liquidation & finally, on this day 2004 we were together we witnessed winners, neither are with us today, but that one special moment will live with me forever

29th February 2004 - Millennium Stadium, our name as winners x

We travelled down on the train, alcahol free train, which we had to get to Darlington Station, due to arranged maintenance carried out on the lines from the Boro, one of the biggest exodus out of Teesside & they decided to do the work, but it didn't spoil the grand day x

What a tremendous weekend that was, one never to be forgotten.

I remember being so pleased Wembley was being rebuilt so we did not have the hoodoo hanging over us. The atmosphere with the closed roof was exceptional too. What a start to the game too. 2-0 up in no time. I remember saying at the time, surely we can’t mess this up now :censored: like always we never do anything the easy way and their goal made us sweat the rest of the game, but what a feeling when Mike Riley blew the final whistle.

To be lucky enough to be present at our first ever major trophy win when you think about all the Boro fans across the world and in the Holgate in the sky over 128 yrs of hurt, I have never felt so proud of my team as I did that day.

For me it’s one of those fuzzy days that you are not sure actually happened, but of course it did.

Strangely one of my biggest memories is the journey back on the coach and the driver pulling into a service station on the M42 (I think) which was rammed solid with so many other Boro coaches that he couldn’t find anywhere to park so he had to apologise and get back in the motorway. I’ve never seen so many coaches in one place at one time. I felt like we had missed the after match party in the services!

We had a good team then, that’s why we won that trophy.

Yes an incredible weekend, and the months after let’s be honest. I think I was dunk for a month after.

We were all out in York the weekend after to continue the celebrations and we bought champagne in judges and the lad serving us was from Redcar So he came out from the bar and joined us.

happy carling cup winning day everyone

🥳

And was it today we should have played our first game on Feb 29th since that great day? And thanks to Sky we are not.

The next time a Saturday falls on 29/2 is 2048.

Only need to wait until 2032 for it to be on a Sunday though... (y)

Still annoying me that they've moved today's match to Monday.
No worse day to watch football all, leaving aside the rarity of a match falling on the 29th of Feb.

Yes so true, is this a typical Boro moment, winning our 1st major trophy & we can only celebrate it properly every 4 years
The club should have told Sky this,

Glad you posted this E74, it was long long road for a lot of us 36 years for me at the time, when the whistle went I could barely hold it together it was all a bit much, all my kids were there one is on the front page of the Gazette he is .. forever in history now.
Afterwards I sat on a bollard before boarding the coach and thought that's it there's nothing left to see , how wrong I was.
Sad when I look at the pictures of Gibson held aloft and after all he's done a lot of the bandwagoners joined when the new stadium was built and are now putting th boot into him. They've no idea how long and hard that road was.

Yep, he must have been gutted to have sell out crowds. What a strange way to hijack a thread about a glorious day. Sad.
