Thinking back 3 'that' goal against us, as a Boro fan

April 1975 Kevin Hector equalising for Derby in a 1-1 draw, a massive confidence drainer & IMHO, stopped us from winning the league

April 1989 Stewart Greys late, late equaliser at Villa Park resulting, IMHO, us going down & them staying up

April 1997 Hemile Heskey resulting in us not winning our 1st Wembley appearence & winning 2 cups & staying up

1. Hector
2. Heskey league cup final equaliser
3. Deane Elland road 1997

all three broke my heart and changed our history

Its hard to disagree with your 3 but I hadn´t been to my first match in 1975 so didn´t see it or know the significance at the time. So if it has to be one that affected me personally I´d pick Chesterfields equalizer at Old Trafford which meant we had yet another match that we couldn´t cope with. Also Williams for Sunderland at home cost us dear that season.

The Kevin Hector goal was just before my time. The first one that really broke me heart was Norman Bell at Wolves in 1981. I was sure we were going to win the cup that year

There's more than 3 in that 97 season alone but Di Matteo's goal so early in the cup final was just another kick in the teeth after the preceding weeks. That last glimmer of hope extinguished.

I'd include bloody watsisname's for West Ham in the cup semi-final. Win that game and we were back in Europe for a third season. I doubt Gibson would have trusted Southgate with that and may have actually appointed a top-drawer manager.
Good point that. Didn’t Riggot miss a good chance as well? Definitely a semi final we should have won.

I will go with Heskey at Wembley and the Chesterfield last minute equaliser (was it Hewitt) in the 1997 season - those goals gave us two extra big matches which sapped our team for the relegation battle. But for those we would have stayed up.

After those it would have to be De Matteo in the Cup final, I think without that bad start we would have run Chelsea very close that day, there wasn’t much between the teams.

Agree, one less days travelling, one less football match & one less game for us fans to fork out our hard earned cash & put another holiday request in for work

Heskey - 13 year old at Wembley. Still fully remember it now. The crowd behind the goal when Walsh hits the bar thinking they scored... and then realising they had 2 secs later.

Hewitt - again 13 I was behind that goal I wasn’t that bothered with that as after the game I remember all chesterfield fans celebrating and boro fans reminding them they blew a 2-0 lead against 10 men.

Deane - I was there too. I think they had a goal disallowed possibly Deane before that too.

Trying to think of another one more obscure. Jagielka v sheff Utd. A game we should have won in 1st Half in relegation season. Jones equaliser against us at home v Sunderland too (I think)

There was a game against newcastle Ayresome Park where we were 3 1 up and a few minutes to go and we cheered when they scored to make it 3 2 and then they made it 3-3 in injury time. Or was it just a nightmare and memory playing tricks.

Similarly which was dead real was being 4-1 up away to Norwich about 10 minutes left. We joined in their celebration music when they made it 2-4 and again when they made it 3-4 but a few nervous glances as we did so. Then they made it 4-4 and the ironic fun turned to disbelief.
