The Waterboys at The Globe On Tuesday

Is it really that overpriced for a large venue? It's a long time since I thought £25 was the going rate for a gig of a known band.

I did see Aerosmith, Lenny Kravitz, stereophonics, 3 colours red & the black crowes at Wembley for £25 but that was like summer 1999. I'm seeing a small American band in london and they're £25 a ticket. Human league later in the year are £45 each I think

I got offered free tickets but had made other plans so couldn’t go.

Last saw them in the 80’s - first time around the time of the Pagan Place album and second time on the Fisherman’s Blues Tour at the City Hall.

Not a fan of much of the newer stuff (well anything from 2000 onwards) but the early stuff I love. Did they play much from Pagan Place/This is the Sea/Fisherman’s Blues?

They did.

The second half of the gig was proper rockin versions, the first half they played around with the original album versions. I thought This Is The Sea was wonderful, even better than Tom Jones recent version.

I think as pricing goes these days, the Globe tickets seem largely par for the course.

They vary quite a bit from act to act, depending on each artists popularity of course. But as The Globe is a brand new venue in the region, now hosting dozens and dozens of events - now all on sale for the coming months (a situation that Teessiders are pretty much unused to) at those prices, I think people will pick and choose.

Which will result in definite 'winners and losers'. So you'll get a half full Waterboys on the one hand, but Paloma Faith sold out - nearly a year in advance, with John Bishop on the verge of selling out two nights in the near future.

Looking at the artist line up, I think it's the slew of 'tribute style shows' that may suffer most sales-wise. Though I could be wrong.

Most I've ever paid for a gig ticket as a matter of interest, is £45+booking fee, for Little Steven & The Disciples Of Soul at the O2 Newcastle a couple of years ago. I justified that as 'value' though, being as they are a 15 piece band fronted by a bone fide rock legend, who play for almost three hours.

John Bishop selling out two nights is something I will never get my head around. He's a nice likeable bloke and I'd really enjoy a beer with him, but I won't part with money to see him (a second time).

That’s more old stuff than I thought they would play, feel sad I missed it now.

Even if I’d just seen the last 4 songs I’d have been happy.

Up until 90s, concert tickets were fairly cheap to try and promote a new album. Now though the big bands must make more money from touring than they do from record (thats my age showing) sales!

I must admit, I wasn't expecting as many early songs, even more so when no-one had got up during them in the first half, then everyone rose to Fisherman's Blues. I thought, uh-oh, it's the folky people that are the main audience now. Actually, they rocked and even though it was a very aged crowd, plenty were up for the earlier stuff once Fisherman's Blues broke the standing up taboo.

They missed a few out that especially my daughter was hoping for but I really liked the newish stuff, like you lefty I was reluctant paying the money after kubix, twistarella and Paul Heaton on the Monday but really glad I went.

We must know each other by sight I guess, maybe even chatted, without realising who each of us are on here.

There are a few Westgarth regulars I am still only on nodding terms terms with. Mind you, there are a few I speak to and don't know their actual names even.
