My son and partner planned to do this in October 2021 - for obvious reasons it tanked.
They worked, they sold up and eventually left UK in Jan this year.
In 4 days they start their dream 3000 km walk.

It was wonderfully emotional chatting to them this morning knowing they are going to fulfill their dream.

What an experience

The other exciting bit is they are about to book their homeward flight after visiting Japan for early April next year.

Wow Finny what an undertaking! That's awesome and what an experience they are going to have. Are they documenting their journey on Soc Med? When they get to section 87 I can buy them dinner if around! They are in for an incredible and varied time. I presume they are experienced walkers as some of those trials are immense. It s 4 months of adventure.

Absolutely epic adventure.
Hope they relish every minute

Hmmmm - must admit, I think they should have done a load more training but, they are in their early 30's, have researched this to death so have to trust them.

That offer of dinner is bloody kind of you - I think they might need it......

They will have a great time. Me and my better half have walked sections of it, mostly in the top of the south.

NI you do have more areas of civilisation to go through, SI lot more rugged and wild.

There will always be somebody around to help if they need it.

Good luck to them

I've been on some of it when walking into hunting areas, goes through some very big mountains! Hope they enjoy it, looks bloody mental to me!

It's stuff like this that makes this board worth sticking around for, despite the nobheads!
They will actually walk within a mile of where i live so by the time they get to here they would have done almost 1100 kilometres. I will willingly treat them! Hence why it would be good to keep track of where they are.

Finny this is an excellent site to work out distances.

Same, if we are around when they are going through Richmond ranges let me know if there is anything we can do, pick up drop of of food etc. Every little helps tbh.

Even happy to walk through to one of the huts and meet up if they are feeling a bit lonely.

What an awesome thing to do; when they get to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing it is as close as they get to me at Taupo. as with Abel and NZBoro, if the need anything, even if its entry to the Cossie Club for cheap beer :) I can offer to lend a hand

We fed a couple who were three quarters of the way through up the greenstone valley, they were very grateful for a meal of fresh venison and a beer after living on noodles for a month!

Unfortunately we are living in a caravan for the next 6 months (building) so there;'s probably more room in their tent and the huts!!!

But happy to help in any way I can

You are in Taupo? Will be doing the Lake Taupo challenge bike ride this November. Staying in Acacia Bay.

Thanks all.
They have just landed in NZ and have 3 days to get provisions ready for the first sections.
When we spoke yesterday they were telling us how supportive/helpful people had been in advance of the walk.
Looks like their is a lovely community in and around the route to help smelly, hungry, knackered strangers.
Really nice

Wow, this is brilliant, reading the posts from the NZ branch of the Boro supporters club.
I have been lucky enough to have visited NZ twice, and absolutely love it.
I know several people who have emigrated there from the United Kingdom, and we met up with an old school mate who lives near Dunedin. We did the Christchurch to Greymouth train ride with them, that is spectacular. We also have friends in Picton who have a charter boat, and sailing the Marlborough Sound is also a magnificent experience. As an aside, we ate venison most of time we were there as in steaks, casseroles, burgers, meatballs and pizzas!
We drove from Martinborough to Castlepoint one day and from Masterton we never passed another car until we arrived there, amazing Country!

Ah the Castlepoint lighthouse. Hope you enjoyed the wines in Martinborough! Did you get as far as the Lake Ferry hotel and enjoy their fish and chips.? The Wine Fair is one of the best events you could ever go to. A real drinking, music extravaganza.
I'm just along the road from Acacia Bay, in Nukuhau. Is that the 100Km+ ride around the lake that you'll be doing?

That's the one. BDO sponsored. Starts and finishes in the Town Centre. There's a real tough climb at Hatepe Hill after 80 ks.~11.4% at its steepest.

Hi Abel, yes we did make it to Lake Ferry. I have to say some of the best fish n’ chips I’ve ever tasted. I believe the fish was Dory, bloody tasty whatever it was. During our second visit to NZ, we stayed one weekend at the Martinborough hotel, where many of the cast from Lord of the Rings stayed, in fact, they renamed the rooms after hobbits etc. We love NZ wine, so the main purpose of our visit was to see the local vineyards. I remember my first visit to Martinborough a year or two earlier, we were visiting one of the vineyards with our host, who was the CEO of Met Service NZ. They were erecting a stage and a temporary seating stand, and I asked them what it was for, and it turned out that they had a Joe Cocker concert on that evening. In the middle of nowhere!! You couldn’t make it up…
