The Verve - Urban Hymns

I only found this out a few months ago. I was listing to Spotify on my TV and it came up in the song facts.

Apparently the Verve don't receive one penny in royalties from it. Arguably their best song and most played in movies and adverts etc. Stunning😕
I think the Rolling Stones recently returned the rights to Richard Ashcroft, could be wrong but I'm sure it was in the news.

Yes and Ashcroft was very “bitter” about it. Happily there is a sweet ending to this story.

One of my favourite albums. I listened to it over and over when it came out. When I flew to the States I played it about 4 or 5 times on repeat on my portable CD player

Have seen Richard Ashcroft a couple of times and again, when he popped up at a Liam Gallagher gig as a guest. First time I saw him was in 1999, just after The Verve split. Alone, he's superb, with The Verve, I imagine it would have been brilliant. As for UH, what an album! Plenty of memories attached to it. Mostly related to my first year at university. Blasting out Bittersweet on my stereo, with the windows open, during a hot summer in 1998.
The Verve were awesome live, I'm sure there is a DVD kicking about from Haigh Hall, as I say that was my Knebworth as I missed out on tickets for it. I remember it likenit was yesterday, with DJ Shadow kicking off proceedings and getting everybody warmed, then Beck being, well Beck and finally The Verve back on home soil. The encore was immense, One Day followed by History was awesome and the finale of Come On just never seemed to end.

An absolutely glorious few weeks May 98, Boro promoted one weekend, Geordies lose a cup final another weekend, The Verve Bank Holiday weekend, topped off by Sunderland losing that play off.

The other great thing was it was a brilliant album to screw a jukebox up with as I seem to remember the album version of Come On lasted for 13 minutes 😁

That's exactly what I did at the pub, almost every night I was in there, back in 1997. Was at university and my halls were in Walsall. There was a great pub, the Flock and Firkin, which had pool tables and a brilliant jukebox. Used to play the same five songs on it and always finished with 'Come On'.

Funny enough the only song i skip is the drugs dint work. Still one my favourite albums though. No way on earth theres any oasis writing connection its far better than their output
Same here, the only song on the album that I'm not a great fan of.

Great album. I only heard A Northern Soul after this, but I ended up thinking that was their best album. On Your Own, So It Goes, Drive You Home, Life's An Ocean, all brilliant - and then I think the best song they ever recorded, History.

Northern soul isn't as strong an album for me but the songs you mentioned above are incredible and as good as anything on Urban Hymns.

I saw the Verve headline V98 at Leeds on the Sunday night, it wasn't long after Nick McCabe had quit and I think it was one of the last gigs they ever played. That is still the best live performance I've ever seen. Richard Ashcroft was at the peak of his career at the time.

History live was incredible, what I'd give to travel back in time and watch that gig again.

Aw man yes. History is my favourite verve track.

From UH though I struggle to find a favourite, the album is so good. Maybe velvet morning

It was former Stones managers Andrew Oldham and Allen Klein who sued the band for using a bigger sample than they had permission for. I don't think there's any animosity between the musicians. I saw Richard Ashcroft supporting the Stones at Murrayfield Stadium in 2018.

Jesus christ what an album!

Just been listening to this, to be honest its the first time I've listened to a lot of these songs for years and forgot how good it was.

I think its one the best albums from that era and so underrated.

Obviously you've got the well known songs like Bittersweet Symphony and lucky man which ended up as singles but songs like Space and Time, Weeping Willow and Velvet Morning are absolutely class.

It took me right back to my youth!
A Northern Soul is my favourite Verve album.
