* The Unofficial "Official" Middlesbrough v Luton Town [11/24] Match-Day Thread *

The Sheff Wed game that was over 50 years ago?

So Carricks an idiot for not achieving a twice a century type of result and only winning 5-1?
He’s only got another 47 and a half years to achieve it, he’d better get a move on.
Of course you don't prepare to win a game 8-0. It seldom happens. But at 4-0, with so many poor results at home, with the opposition all over the place, yellow cards galore, and arguing amongst themselves, and a bench full of talent and a two week break coming up, and an inferior goal difference to the teams around you in the table - don't you really go for it?

Carrick thinks not.

No, I have. I saw the game against Sheff Wed.

I would have thought that after so many poor performances at home that Carrick would have wanted to take the chance to annihilate Luton. They were shocking. So, with the game won, he took the foot off the gas. As soon as Luton scored then Boro scored again.

With half of Luton's team on yellow cards and the players arguing amongst themselves, Boro could have scored eight or more.

But no.

In Carrick you trust.
What is the matter with you?
I saw the game against Sheffield Wed and it was a great way to sign off the season as Champions. I think that Sheffield Wed went down. Luton were in the Premier League last year. It was a GREAT win today. UTB

I think Soutra is what you might call an Outlier ( of thought ) and I'm thinking outside the Kuiper belt right now. Either that , or a Savant , I'm undecided. Soutra , have you ever looked at a thrown pack of cards on the floor and totalled the face value of each of the face up cards by suit, like within a second ?

No. We see the game out, get the 3 points and have no further injuries.

I've seen it!
I thought you'd have mentioned the 9-0 v. Brighton in 1958 - a game we both attended based on past posts.

Well I haven't seen the game yet and I'm thrilled to bits that it was 5-1. Wanting 8 or 9 sounds like something a deluded Geordie or Manc would say.

It was entirely possible but you don't want your finely tuned athletes bursting a gut for goal difference.

The multiple subs disrupted our rhythm as well.

Carrick was spot on with the subs. It allowed Doak, lath and Burgzorg their standing ovations and let them have a rest when the points were in the bag.

I will be watching my Abroath v Bon Accord DVD tonight (OK magic lantern) to show how to go from 4-0 to 36-0.

Since the Championship was formed, there have only been two matches that finished 8-0, Bournemouth beating Birmingham and Wigan beating Hull, and that one was during COVID with no fans in the stadium.

Soo .. less than 1 in 1000 chance of winning by seven ( at least) in the champ ..
