* The Unofficial "Official" Matchday Thread. Boro v Peterborough. Saturday 16th October *

Wish we could play Peterborough every week, we would most likely be promoted, unbeaten at home v Posh (y)

Won 7

Drew 2

Lost zero

Goals for 17

Goals against 2

So a CB who wins a penalty, should have won another penalty, scored a penalty, had 46 passes at 85%, had a goal saving recovary and didn't put a foot wrong defensively should get a 6??
Can’t argue with what you’ve said TBH. I just think it was two poor teams. I sort of enjoyed it because I love watching football but the Boro’s quality until the subs were made was mental. We were absolutely appalling. That’s the reason I struggle to give lads 7s or more.

A good result.
It was a different line up.
Its good to see us short of the usual players.
It gave those who are "not ready" the chance to show that they are "ready".
One gave the assist to the other, who scored his second goal in the senior team career.
A little lop - sided.

Coburn needs to start against Barnsley.
You cant have a lad on a high, then demote him to the bench next match.
The usual bag of liquorice allsorts cant wint two games on the trot - so use the subs and
start with Issiah Jones [a - ha] to run the balls off the opposition. (y)

As a team, I absolutely agree, as a team performance it was disjointed, not surprising when we look at having a CM at CB, a left CM at RWB, a winger at LWB and a LW at CM. All the units other than up top were scratch units. But despite that I don't think anyone let themselves down as an individual, and some players really put miles in today. As a team performance I'd give it a 5/10

The confidence is still clearly very low, and I'm very happy with the cleansheet, encouraged that Payero did ok, liked Coburns cameo, and I'm happy to see Hernandez fit. I'll take that considering how barebones we are right now

I think an issue today was the manager could've played with one player out of position but chose to play with four out of position instead. Howson at right back, Bamba and McNair in the middle and Kokolo at left back. The team was all over the shop for 70-75mins. It was a disjointed team and a very disjointed game as a result.

The main thing was the win and we can hopefully kick on now. Peltier will be back on Wednesday night so I'll brace myself for another reshuffle.
Viv a fair post on the surface however it is overly simplistic to just write about 4 at the back especially when the opposition played 5 in midfield and had we done as you suggest we’d have 2 of the back four being midfielders and not natural defenders

The main reason Neil Warnock got it right yesterday was based principally for 2 reasons ;

- he played the same formation as posh and so with better players and at home I’d expect us to come out on top
- playing with two midfielders as RWB and LWB allowed those players to show more of their natural game of attacking and creating so a cute move by Neil Warnock rather than have midfielders trying to be defenders against inferior opponents.

Doesnt seem alot does it. ...average of 2.3 (ish) a season at home.
Wonder if we had a season without ever getiin a single home penalty or a whole season withour one home and away.

No, disagree, what should happen is coburn gets 30 mins on Wednesday therefore a bit longer to build his confidence
Unless he is tearing it up in training which I expect isn’t the case

Let’s not sugar coat yesterday- the first half epitomised the poor standard of football we have seen all too often.

Yes things picked up in the second half- however the opposition we faced was very poor.

And, IF Posh had been awarded a penalty, something that could easily of happened, we might have been faced with a totally different scenario this morning.

There is little doubt that Warnock tactics, style of play, introduction of subs and when, and our points haul this calendar year have polarised the fan base.

I am yet to see the benefit of retaining Warnock - especially as this is his last season in football. The season is and probably will be one of treading water.

The occasional win - offering some posters the chance to go completely overboard with enthusiasm- bordering on hysteria- does little to overcome the deficiencies we have.

Still, I am sure this will be a theme repeated over and again as the season progresses.

Can't argue with much of what you've said really, but I'm not sure Warnock deserves credit for playing Tav and Hernandez at wing-back as he's played wingers there before and it hasn't worked. I think he put them there because he felt had no other option. Peterborough should've had a penalty at 0-0 as well; if the referee had given them that then would you be saying Warnock deserved credit? I'm not so sure anyone would.

But he does deserve credit for making changes that turned the game in our favour and because we've won, and it's job done. The confidence boost will hopefully carry us through Wednesday night now and we can get some points racked up.

Let's be honest though, until the penalty yesterday we were absolutely appalling. The main thing is the result but the performance was in keeping with what we've seen for the vast majority of the calendar year. People will point to the injury crisis but all it's done is make a disjointed and incohesive mess of a football team even more of a disjointed and incohesive mess.

You give the lad the start, then see how it goes.(y)
