Its that time again.......

Wilder happy.jpgmr.jpg

Its doesnt seem like two weeks since we drew 0-0 with Rotherham at The Riverside. It feels like an eternity. Its been hard to work out where we are in the season. What with an early start back in July, a congested callander, the transfer window closing after the season began and the World Cup coming up.........its fair to say we need to get a run together and reset our unexpected inconsistent start to the campaign. 10 games in - and needless to say - there`s been much speculation and rumours concerning the Boro on numerous media platforms and from those "in-the-know". However, in spite of that, rumours of the end of Middlesbrough Football, Chris Wilder leaving for the South Coast and players jumping ship, have all been grossly exaggerated in the minds of those with nothing else to do on a rainy day. Chris shrugged off the "noise and nonsense" surrounding Management when asked about rumours and journo-talk this morning.

So to the serious stuff: who would expect on the back of last season to see Boro and Coventry sitting right at the wrong end of the table after 10 games? Coventry have games in hand, due to their stadium owners having a potato-field for a football pitch. Apparently, during the Commonwealth Games, the "Coventry Building Society Arena" hosted the Rugby 7`s competition and the pitch hasnt recovered. Coventry have moved one or two players out, but have little room to shell out for loanees or bring in players permanently. Add to that a few niggles and injuries. We know the score dont we?!

But no excuses today. Luango, Clarke, Mowatt and Steffan have been worked hard since returning to training. Chris Wilder said all four were "under-cooked". The three out-field lads needed more work to sharpen up, so the Gaffa made it clear they have focussed on getting them up to the mark. Steffan, who`s appearances have been interrupted with injury - now needs to sharpen up and focus on his game. Chris said the [goal-keeping] coaches had been working with him, to get him back to the place he needs to be.

Theres been enough down-time and hot air in the last fortnight, so lets get down to brass tacks and bring home three valuable points. At the moment [prior to tonight`s Hull v Luton game] Boro are 5 points [Yes 5!] off the play-offs. So we have everything to play for. We can hopefully add to Coventry`s woes, but they`l be thinking the same. Its been raining all day and the spud field at Coventry should make for a slippery, mucky, wet, interesting game.

Up The Mighty Boro(y)

The Sky Blues host Middlesbrough at the Coventry Building Society Arena in a Sky Bet Championship fixture. Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the opponents...

Opposition:

Heading into the weekend's clash against the Sky Blues, Middlesbrough occupy on of the relegation places, sitting 22nd in the Championship.

Chris Wilder's side have two wins, four draws and four defeats so far in the 2022/23 campaign, drawing with Rotherham United last time out.

After a busy summer transfer window, welcoming former Sky Blues loanee Ryan Giles, Marcus Forss, Matthew Clarke, Alex Mowatt and Zack Steffen, Middlesbrough would have expected a better start to the season.

Wilder's men travel to the Coventry Building Society Arena and he will be hoping to welcome back Chupa Akpom and Darragh Lenihan from injury, after the duo missed the last few outings.

Manager Quotes:

Mark Robins:

“It's been a long time coming hasn't it. I think it's exciting for everybody. I think the supporters are certainly due a home game and so are the players.

“We're looking forward to it, it's a good game and there are loads of reasons to be positive and the main one obviously is going back playing in front of the supporters at the arena.

“I think the players have been starved of these games and the supporters have been starved of that and I think that you'll see a wall of noise tomorrow and we'd love to see a huge number.

“The noise levels have gone up in training and the excitement around the game is there and you can see it when they become noisier and more vocal you can see the excitement starting to build and it’s there for everyone to see.

“But like I said, we're just looking forward to getting back and playing in front of the supporters and putting on a decent show and hopefully we can put on a performance that warrants three points.”

Chris Wilder:

“To lose two/three of your starters from that Sheffield United game has been quite a big dint for us.

“All been back on the grass and working this week so there is a decision to be made over the weekend. Zack getting minutes on the grass is huge. They are big players for us, all three of them.

“Chuba has become a big player for us. Something that has not been said to him before is ‘welcome back’ or ‘glad to have you back’ so maybe he’s not had that and there is a little smile on his face but he’s trained well so positive about him being involved.

“Zack has had a stop start first part of his career at Middlesbrough. Being out injured and getting himself back, playing against Rotherham. He’s a good couple of weeks of conditioning work to sharpen him up. Hopefully he does what we believe he can do and be the best goalkeeper in the division.”

Head-to-Head:

Coventry wins: 17
Draws: 15
Middlesbrough wins: 19

On loan until the New Year

Darlington have today completed the loan signing of defender Dan Dodds from Middlesbrough.

Dan, 21, has been with Boro since he was a youngster, and advanced through the various age groups until he made his first time debut earlier this season against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup.

Manager Alun Armstrong has been tracking him for some time, and has persuaded him to join Quakers on loan until January.

Kasey Palmer joined the Sky Blues from Bristol City ahead of the 2022/23 season.

The 25-year-old, once a Chelsea youth star, made the switch for an undisclosed fee before signing a three-year contract with City.

Palmer came through the ranks at Chelsea, enjoying loan spells away from Stamford Bridge in the Championship and then the Premier League with Huddersfield Town between 2016 and 2017, after winning the Championship Play-Off Final with the Terriers.

He would then feature in the Championship again for Derby County, Blackburn Rovers and then Bristol City.

Palmer would make the move to Ashton Gate a permanent one in 2019, also having a loan at Swansea City during the first half of last season.

In total so far, his career has seen 155 appearances and score 18 goals.

He has also been capped by England at all youth levels and was part of the side that won the Toulon Tournament in 2016.

He has since played one game for the Jamaican National Side.

Excellent Roofie as always and much appreciated .

FACT:

For the first 15 years of their existence Coventry City were called SINGERS Football Club.

They adopted their name from Willie Stanley, who founded the club whilst working at the local Singer Cycle`s manufacturer.

Last Time Out

A 2-0 defeat away at Coventry saw the previous Managers inconsistent form continue.
Coventry were all over us like a bad rash.

It would be two months before Chris Wilder took over his tenure at The Riverside.

HISTORY BOOK

Coventry City`s Highfield Road Ground from the air.

Typical of most football clubs - it was surrounded by rows of red brick terraced houses whose occupants worked in the many Cycle, Motor Cycle and Automotive factories on which the City was built. This is an early photograph. Coventry expanded up until WWII - becoming the Detroit of the West Midlands - even before Birmingham was handed the nick-name "motor city". During WWII the car and engineering plants quickly switched to aircraft and munitions manufacture. Almost all those in Coventry who werent on active service or in reserved occupations, worked in the factories - covering shifts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It was crucial to the war effort.

CC8.png

On the 14th November 1940 - 500 Lufwaffe Bombers dropped over 500 tonnes of high explosive, 30,000 incendiary bombs and 50 land-mines. The blitz lasted for 11 hours - with a moonlit night and clear skies. The Nazis had intended to "knock out" Coventry. Over 500 people lost their lives and 43,000 of Coventry`s homes were either destroyed or severely damaged. There is no record [I can find] of damage to the football ground.

1664570607583.png
The factories and houses disappeared in an inferno of fire and smoke. The sky was red and orange from the blaze as Coventry burned - and could be seen as far away as Nottingham, Leicester, Derby and Birmingham. Coventry bandaged its wounds and found ways of working amidst the piles of rubble. The football club - like the framework of the old Cathedral - survived.

Congratulations to the U21`s who drew 1-1 against the Skunks at Heritage Park.
Joe Gibson equalised well into stoppage time.

1664573669768.png

1664573772999.png
Hoppe hit the woodwork and Sonny Finch went close on a number of occasions.
The lads were probably worth all three points, so the Skunks should be grateful.

1664573710407.png
Boyde-Munce also featured.
Good to see the lads getting minutes under their belts.

Went last year.

£17 for two pies n pint. I think it was this lavish expenditure that allowed them to turn down our bid for big Vic.

Crooks hit the bar. Uche decided to do something other than shoot or pass she. Through 1-1 with two unmarked men square.

Witnessed a fight after the game from the safety of the coach, next to the Boro coach. Peltier hugged everyone, all staff too before leaving.

Nice day, but we were sloppy and laclustre.
Huffed and puffed.
Didnt seem right - with thousands of football fans having to walk through a crowded shopping centre to get to the ground.
I didnt touch the pies.(n)

Pie was the best part, actually I forgot. Glen Durrant (Darts geezer) was there. Spot on having photos with people.

Thinking we might get to Preston at the end of October. Been to long since my last away day. Also Preston, there’s quite a reassuring feeling when we are cack going to away games. The result is imeterial

Despite the defeat I thought the Coppers and PNE were superb hosts that day.

Even the coppers gave our fans a lift to the pub!!! 🍻
