What an end to Boro year. What an end to the first half of the 2022 / 23 season! What a difference a decent Gaffa makes! What a turn-around for Chuba! What a superb fight-back from all the players and the Coaching Team! From 21st just over 2 months ago up to as high as 6th and more! What more is there to say? Well......

12 months ago - January 2022: We welcomed the New Year on the back of a six-game unbeaten run. A late 2-1 victory at Bloomfield road saw the fans going wild. Bedlam! Had we really turned the corner? Two months earlier, Boro had said cheerio to Neil Warnock after a 1-1 draw away to West Brom. All seemed to be going well - until the beginning of April when Boro appeared to have hit a sand-drag. Before that we hit the highs of a late penalty win at Old Trafford, saw our Josh score a superb goal against Spuds and had thrashed Derby County 4-1 at home [Take that].

But the wheels started to fall off and somehow the team lost its consistency and its bite. With woeful displays against Barnsley at Oakwell, at home to Hull and total collapse at Preston was a foretell of what was to continue at the start of the 2022/23 season. Coventry was the last gasp for Chris Wilder - who had lost control of himself - never mind the team - and we said goodbye.

Up stepped Leo the Lion to steady the ship and bring order to the procedings. Five games later, with 2 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats, he gave us chance to take a breath, whilst we anticipated the coming of the new messiah. Being Boro fans, we`ve grown used to being offered a loaf and ending up with the crumbs. A 4-1 victory away at Wigan included a superb first senior strike for Hayden Hackney - and a "reborn" striker was coming out of the shadows - scoring the winner home to Brum and a penna at Wigan. We had come out of the sand-drag. We were ready for a fresh start. Ready to go together in the right direction. To do what we all knew we were capable of - start putting in a shift. Re-ignite the spark. Get behind the lads and start winning again. Little did we know, just where the red and whites were going next?

October 29th 2021 saw Michael carrick take to the dug-out at Preston, where an extra time goal saw us miss out on a valuable point. Noticably it was Chuba Akpoms first goal under the new Gaffa`s tenure. We know what happened next: from 21st in the Championship - [licking our wounds and looking like relegation fodder rather than promotion candidates] - to the last play-off spot with victory at Ewood Park! Chuba is top of the Championship Scorers and Ryan Giles is second in the Championship "assists". Won 6 Drawn 1 Lost 2 - sounds a pretty good return with a squad who`d lost self-belief.

How great to see our young lads getting an opportunity - including our "development player" Marcus Forss. Haydn Hackney looks like hes been playing first team for more than a few months. Johnny Howson appears to be getting younger every match and the likes of our World Cup Aussie is scoring stupendous game winners.

Chuba has to be the success of our season, so - far. The player many of us expected to be shown the exit, has been essential to Carricks winning team. Woody, Grant, Leo, Catts and the backroom staff, appear to be "happy" in their work and actually doing a brilliant job - not always acknowledged for their efforts behind the scenes.

Today we face a Birmingham side, who sit 16th in the table, having just come away from a 1-0 home defeat to struggling Hull City - who have conceded over 40 goals this season so far. Consistently inconsistent best sums up Brums season. We showed real character coming back after that forgetable experience at leaders Burnley. Forss goal straight after the restart nearly took the string out the net and Riley`s rocket wasnt completely unlike his pre-world-cup winner at Norwich.

Us fans deserve to take a few compliments besides: Michael Carrick hasnt just mentioned the importance of our support in passing, but made it clear the impact we have on players and on their performance. Everywhere we go, we sell out and show up the home supporters. There`s a sea of red and white in the stands, whether its Blackburn, Wigan, Hull, Preston...you know. Marcus Forss said after the Blackburn game "...that felt like a home game to me.....with the crowd..."[pointing to the Darwen stand].

Keep Calm and Carrick On!

Thanks Roofie, I will be listening on the radio as Im spent up after a visit Balckburn and some family tickets for Brighton. Thinking of the FA cup my first visit to St Andrews was 1975 in the FA quarter final but we lost one nil.

Flashback:
Birmingham City 1 Boro 4

Saturday 19th december 2020
[Edit]

Boro moved up to 6th place in the table after a thumping victory away at St Andrews.
Neil Warnock faced Boro former Manager Aitor Karanka. Boro old boys Adam Clayton and Lucas Jutkiewicz also faced us that day. Neither was able to stop us having a "big day out" in the "Second City".

Scott Hogan [Brums Blackburn-Gallagher] nearly breached Boro`s defence in the first minutes, but Blues took the lead on 15 minutes. With a superb assist from Mark Bola, Britt managed to hit the net on 27 minutes.

A Marvin Johnson cross allowed Saville to score the second with 14 minutes to go before the end of the first half.
HT: 1-2

The Blues goalkeeper gave Boro an early Christmas present from a corner - fumbling the ball to see Lewis wing push it over the line. Wingy scored Boro`s 4th with one of his specials from outside the box.
FT: 1-4

I Guess Thats Why they Call It The Blues?

Inside Birmingham City FC changing rooms and the incredible stories you may not know

1672639447806.png
It's 1998, Blues are up 1-0 against Nottingham Forest and seemingly on the cusp of three points. But disaster strikes in the 82nd minute: Michael Johnson receives a second yellow for a rash challenge on Pierre Van Hooijdonk and is sent off.

At the time, it was claimed the walk between the pitch and Birmingham City's dressing room was the longest in league football. When a dejected Johnson eventually reached it, Forest had mounted a stunning comeback with two goals in under five minutes.
Heartbreak again - but just one of many stories to come out of St Andrew's historical dressing rooms over the years.

Today, the club's dressing room is a stunning sea of cobalt, styled with the modern footballer in mind. It's here where Dortmund superstar Jude Bellingham - whose market value is estimated at well above £100million after impressive form in Qatar - made his name. Now, it's the home of Brummie and Blues captain Troy Deeney who hopes to see his club charge up the table before the end of the 2022-23 Championship season.
To coincide with behind-the-scenes snaps of the dressing room in 2022, we made contact with Blues' current tour guide to share historic BCFC changing room stories fans may not know.

Changing room tales

FA Cup Final bust-up (May 5, 1956)

In the weeks leading up the FA Cup Final against Man City, Blues captain Len Boyd carried a rib injury. The club tried to keep this quiet ahead of the massive game. Boyd declared himself fit on the morning of the final. However, his performance did not reflect his assessment, and it was later revealed he had a broken rib.
This game came before the FA introduced in-game substitutes and therefore playing Boyd proved costly. At half time, Boyd felt the wrath of his teammates when a huge fight broke out in the Blues changing room. City went on to lose the match 3-1 and Boyd's contract with the club was terminated before the start of the 1956–57 season.

Sneaky Blues do Stevenage dirty? (January 4, 1997)

Stevenage requested to play at St Andrew's for the 1997 FA Cup tie to attract a large attendance. Blues and the FA agreed.A few days before the game, Stevenage asked City if they could use Blues' home changing room which was adjacent to the main stand. City again agreed, but didn't quite deliver on the promise. Staff only flipped changing room door signs, swapping home with away, leading Stevenage to be incredibly underwhelmed by what they found. In 1997, the away changing room only had one shower that was operational, a tiny bath, one toilet and was cold due to a badly patched-up broken window.
Blues' current tour guide told us: "I think Stevenage were a little surprised by the basic fittings!"

Trevor Francis one-shot skill

Francis, who played for the Blues between 1970–1979, reportedly wowed players with his skill when he was manager of the club. A group of frustrated players were attempting to hit the changing room's shower control with a ball from approximately six yards - but none of them could.
Enter Francis, who after asking what all the pandemonium was about, took the ball and hit the control first time.

Inside information doesn't help Blues V Leeds (December 29, 2019)

Pre-match ground tour sponsors entered Blues' away changing room against Leeds in 2019. This was agreed by the Leeds kit men and, as usual, players' kits were out and photographers were taken. But in the corner of the room was a flip chart, according to Blues' tour guide. He told us: "Approximately 30 mins later, I receive a phone call telling me that a photo of Leeds tactics had appeared on social media. I realised it was because the tactics were on the charts which the kit men had made no attempt to hide! "However, this didn’t help, as we went on to lose 5-4 in an amazing game."

Haven’t seen that photo before. We were on the side so the mass ranks on the right of that photo. Probably for me the single biggest disappointment in a result I have ever felt - even more than the Cup final losses.

Fond memories of St Andrews, was there for the ‘Ayala offside goal’. We were right infront on the commentary box. I started a Boeteng chant off and he was in there with Holloway. Holloway was like an excitable kid buzzing for him. Nice moment for boateng and the fans

The total opposite for me. The 1975 defeat gave me a personal hatred of the place and this was reinforced by two defeats there subsequently. Have not been back and not going tonight either. Just as well.
