* The unofficial "Official" Boro v Barnsley match-day thread *

reading Warnocks comments in gazette sounds like he is determined to get Howson back in midfield. Baffles me, a team that works has fallen into his lap through injury but he is going to change it as soon as he can. Woodgate did the same, the only time his team had a run of form was when injuries force him to play howson as a defender.

That run of form is beating two awful teams who were in the relegation zone.

It's over-egging it to say he's found a team that works because of that, we were awful against Peterborough and we would have won last night whether Howson was in midfield, defence or goal.

I was talking about woodgates team having a run of form. Apart from that, each to their own. I'm not a fan of howson as a CM. Never have been. I don't think we have ever looked a good team when he has been our main man. Both crooks and Payero offered more these last two matches than he has this season but are going to be dropped/moved as soon as injuries clear up.

I'm not a fan of him in midfield either, it's more that I'm questioning the idea that he's found a team that worked because of two wins against terrible teams.

We got a good win against Sheffield United, kept the same team and then somehow lost to Hull.

Last night was the first time we'd won consecutively all season, and it's coincidentally also the first time we changed a winning team.

I'd have Bola and Dijksteel back in the side for Saturday in a heartbeat, even though I think Peltier put in a good performance last night.
It would likely mean Howson back as a defensive midfielder, where he's not the greatest, but so be it.

Dijksteel, Hall, Fry, Bola, Browne, Ameobi, Sporar. That's a lot of talent that will be back in 4-6 weeks (well except Ameobi who I don't think we will see this season). If we can keep ticking over and stay striking distance, and bolster in January, despite how limited we and our manager are, we could still be around the play offs. I haven't given up hope, strangely

I wouldn't rush them back either.

Dijksteel is apparently the closest to a return, two weeks to go till the next international break.
4 games in the next 16 days, 3 away will be a tough schedule. But then its 2 weeks off because of internationals. so if Bola, Dijksteel etc. need 30 days to get fit they'll only miss those 4 games. I'd think at least 4 of our injuries will have cleared by then

Yeah, its all opinions really. My only point is that if playing howson as a central midfielder is the hill you are willing to die on then you are destined to fail at this level. He just isn't good enough, and I find it frustrating to hear warnock saying how desperate he is to get him back in there. You can debate the merits of the opposition but I think crooks/payero have done enough to be given more of a chance to develop. Especially when you consider how much Warnock himself has given credit to crooks for helping payero during the match.

I like Howson but he is utility player that can do a decent job but any team that builds it self around him will never be good enough over a season.

I've always thought he was alright when everyone was hammering him (some more than others).

He made a rick tonight but made a decent save from the follow up. Definitely say he's better than we had last season and cost nothing. You can't really moan.

I have no idea if Daniels is any good.

As you say he is alright but only alright. As you say he is a step up from last season and I think we have bigger priorities in other areas. ATM he is not letting team down and hopefully that will carry on.

When you look at the table if only we’d beaten hull . Hopefully we can see our best team over the next 12 games before window opens again .

We've signed umpteen new players and the manager has struggled to get the team balanced. Show a modicum of patience. We have a manager in place who has consistently brought success at the clubs he has managed.

WE NEED A LONG TERM PLAN!!!!!!
SACK THE MANAGER!!!!!!!
WE NEED A LONG TERM PLAN!!!!!!!
SACK THE MAMAGER!;!!;!!!!!
etc etc.

Yeah except in this case needing a long term plan and sacking the manager aren't mutually exclusive. Not that I was calling for the manager to be sacked.

He's leaving in 7 months anyway

Im not just talking about Neil Warnock. people continually waffle on about wanting a long term plan and wanting the kids to play when they won't allow a manager to fail.
1st season saves us from relegation
2nd season playoffs
3rd season promotion
4th season sacked.

Any regression and the atmosphere becomes poisonous and the managers position becomes untenable.

Given a long enough timeline the survival rate for any manager is zero

Crooks has to stay in that holding midfield role, it's one of the few games this season where we've had some authority in midfield, it usually resembles a basketball game.
agreed, he can do a job further forward, but he is the only player in the squad that has the discipline, physique and athleticism to play that role. But he also gives the foundation for other less disciplined, forward thinking midfielders such as Tav and Payero to do their thing.
