* The Unofficial “Official” Middlesbrough v Sunderland “TEES_WEAR DERBY” [02/25] Match-Day Thread *

Even Kevin Phillips has just said they got a bit of luck in getting the result and we deserved a draw.

It is all about margins.
Maybe we did deserve a draw, but we didn’t get one and it’s happened far too many times, the amount of times we have been by far the better team and not won is embarrassing yet very rarely we are second best do we get a result.

Well, as long as you were entertained, that's all that matters. Who needs points?
Have you never walked away from a game and thought we played well at times there and that was a good game?

It was fine margins and lady luck was against us.

Sunderland played us at the right time with players coming in and going out. We missed Doak running at Sunderland, who would have caused them all kinds of trouble, we never had a centre forward on the pitch and played two debutants and a third as sub out of position.

Truthfully, other than not getting the point we deserved, I can see positives in that game.

Maybe I should apologise to you for not being negative.

For a team with top six aspirations our defence and defensive play is ridiculously poor. It simply cannot be bad luck to surrender leads week in, week out. Nor is it simply poor fortune to concede so many soft, poor goals. That it happens with such alrming regularity is down to Carrick and his coaching staff. How many times does this type of performance need to happen before there’s a change of approach from either the coaching team or Gibson himself ? It’s frankly ridiculous. We lack any semblance of substance or resiliency when we are put under pressure and cannot defend a lead.

It’s not just about the goals though is it ?

Yeah their goals were lucky but it’s the rest of the performance at the back, the way we play at the back and the amount of goals we concede is embarrassing yet Carrick obviously still drills it into them to play like that.
If we had Spains defence then yeah but come on, with our defenders, playing like that
None of their goals came from us playing out of the back, ours came from Sunderland playing out.

That's sport mate, you don't always get what you deserve.

Le Fee has basically just said what I noticed. He knew Ayling would come flying in to pressure him so he looked to first touch it past him. Ayling needs to shake his head, so obvious what he was doing
Ayling was up against a class player there tonight but I am concerned about his passing ability, his controlling a ball ability and his lack of pace and positioning.
I expected more.

He has a great attitude but unfortunately he’s finished. He also gives the ball away a lot which with our general defending we can’t afford.

I only ever walk away from games thinking about the final score. I realise that's not how everyone operates. But on a night like tonight, with the game decided by yet another freak defensive mishap goal and no points in the bag despite scoring twice, I can't summon up any positivity.

Maybe we need to set up like Burnley and bore the pants off everyone.

Le Fee is a class player. But you have to stand off a little at times against a player like that

I’ve not given marks for a while

Travers 8 - good debut very unlucky to let 3 in
Ayling 4 - rocks for brains. Le Fee wanted him to go tight and challenge the first ball and he fell for it repeatedly
Edmundson 3 - maybe unlucky with the chest but he made repeated errors
Rav 5 - tough night
Giles 6 - had done well until the freak own goal
Morris 5 - looked off the pace again, needs to get fitter, hasn’t looked 100% since he came back
Hackney 8 - goal, assist and worked his ass off
Whittaker 6 - put the effort in but second best
Azaz 5 - anonymous
Bergzorg 8 - constant threat, good goal, worked hard never gave up
Forss 5 - doesn’t look match fit

Conway 5 - doesn’t look match fit
Iling-Junior 7 - good cameo, looks awkward with a big stride, he’ll entertain
Would agree with most of them.
Thought Hackney was very good and Burgzorg the most effective of the front 4.
I agree Morris struggled as well.

Ayling terrible and Azaz may as well have not bothered putting his kit on

Azaz has gone right off the boil, be a challenge to keep his place when others are fit if Doak is available Whittaker can drop into the 10 spot and with Conway for Inheacho can drop into there

If you see positive changes then yes. But again we've looked poor out of possession.
Again we've let a lead slip. How many points have we tossed away from winning positions.
Again we've conceded three goals.
