The Steffen conundrum

He Still makes me nervous he gets lost when he comes to catch a ball from a corner he doesnt think when he kicks out the ball anyone on here who thinks he would make his way into the city team is dreaming the sooner he goes home the better he will cost us in the playoffs & then who on here will still be backing him.
Ah well if he makes you nervous lets get rid then

What on earth do you do with a keeper like Steffen?

His at times lackadaisical ball distribution from the back, playing himself and others into trouble, his wild flapping attempts at corners that get no where near the ball, etc etc is so infuriating.

Last night for their goal, he seemed more interested in pushing the Sheff Utd player out of the way, that he wandered out of position and couldn't get near the weak header ( mind, he was not alone in getting no where near it)

But, jesus wept, he is a hell of a shot stopper and seems to be top drawer in 1 on 1 situations.

Will he win us more points than he loses us?

I think on the balance of things, he brings much more to the team than he costs us.
I actually think he has improved considerably in dealing with high balls into the box during his time with us.

Can someone give Beemer here a cuddle?

I have been critical of his distribution and he still does make me nervous at times but I thought he was superb last night. Made some big saves at important times. His performance went under the radar a bit because we were so good to watch offensively and those players are getting a lot of plaudits but Steffen deserves a lot of credit in that win.

I think he does the "keeping" bit very well. His distribution is questionable at times but that's the way Carrick wants him to play.

his distribution is also outstanding at times

IF we went up then Steffen Giles and Archer surely are our first 3 transfer targets. Probably cost the best part of 50m for all three nowadays.

It’s hard to get there….

And this shows how hard it will be to stay there… I mean £50m just to stand still .(assuming valuation above is about right, could be more/less)

Am sure we will want to strengthen elsewhere and with a few other loan players on the books that will need replacing too.

Part of the problem is we don’t have enough tall and strong players in the team to protect him from corners. Last night we only had one out field player taller than 6 foot 1

IF we go up and it is a big IF still, we need a GK (possibly Steffen), two LBs (Giles +1), a RB, a CM to replace Mowatt, a RW, a reserve 10, 2 quality CFs (Archer +1). That’s 10 players. I’d also expect Daniels, Smith, McNair, Bola, Mowatt, Muniz, Crooks and possibly Dijksteel and Jones, to all leave.

Positive is one could be a loan, so 9 signings, a couple would be reserves so cheaper options, and a couple would be younger less proven players so maybe not premium price. Still I would expect promotion to mean a 100m+ investment. That might sound too much, but remember our income will be 120m plus first year and amortised transfers will be 25m from a 100m investment. So it’s quite possible

Crooks came on last night and he instantly started pinging them to his head for the flick. Before that spent time drawing them out, he does that, two players from his pass play a forward pass and take a risk and the whole pitch is wide open and we are on the edge of their box. Risk is worth the reward.

you had me in the first half of your reply, then you lost me.

i think he will earn more points than he costs us

He's starting to remind of me Schwarzer in that he makes lots of scruffy saves. Good at getting random bits of his body in the way of shots and also very good at 1v1's. He's also keen to look unhurried. I feel like he can sometimes lack a little edge in concentration leading him to be slow to react. In a game like yesterday where he's constantly being called on he does well because concentration isn't an issue. He's also a bit prone to misjudging when to come for a ball.

We tend to have unrealistic expectations of keepers. Even the very best will make minor errors every game. I'm not convinced that Steffen is Premier league standard but I don't think he's too far off.

Hi Liam.

Don't get too frustrated, it was unfortunate what happened against Barnsley, but I don't think your distribution is suited to how we play under Carrick anyway.

Welcome to the board though.

Just so you know, Kieran Scott posts as @Nobby_Barnes, so watch what you say when he's around.

Those that are backing him you better not change your mind in the playoff final when we lose there are better keeper in league 1 & 2 than him that havent as strong a defence in front of them .
Ooooo now you’ve told us

It’s obvious that this conversation/thread indicates that the jury is still out on Steffen, and while it is then it’s clear he’ll need to improve and be consistent.

Personally I think he’s so much better than anything we’ve had for a few seasons but compare him to Mark Schwarzer or even Randolph then I think he’s perhaps 2 or three levels below where he needs to be.

Steffen is good keeper for the Championship that’s clear but he definitely has room to grow and perform consistently, it’s all about if he can challenge himself physically and mentally. Should we buy him for next season? - I’d have to hold my thought on that until we know the outcome of this season.

You must be the bloke who sits behind me and constantly shouts ‘hoof it up there’
