The Steffen conundrum

Steffen conundrum; longest word I could get is using five letters

I must be missing something as I have Fs left?
Just pretend that you're speaking Welsh and put those two Fs in front of either one of those two words that you came up with. Job done.

I can't think of many (if any) champo GKs who are better than Steffan with the ball at their feet. He makes misplaced passes (which may be a concentration issue) and the QPR goal was a big mistake. Didn't realise it was so far out and that wide until I saw it again on the MFC site. However, I will give him the benefit of the doubt and put it down to general rustiness as he hasn't played regular first team football for about 3 or 4 years. I think this affects goalies much more than other players.
I think he will hopefully learn from his mistakes and has generally got better as the season has gone on. It's just that he is still making the odd mistake, but his general overall play is good. Certainly for the style we play, no-one is better.
Schwarzer was the best Boro keeper I have seen. Dimi had a good defence in front of him and didn't need to make many saves. Randolph an excellent shot stopper. However nowadays, you need to be good with your feet as a GK, and Steffan is easily the best we have had at that skill.
Agree, I'm astonished to read comments that he's poor with the ball at his feet. Some of the balls he's pinged around have been incredible.

Exactly, he was damn poor and a ridiculous mistake to replace Dimi. Mind you, he replaced the whole of the right side which had been successful as well.

Dimi needed replacing, he was decent and did the basics right but he wasn’t a good keeper just decent, he was also crippled, the way Karanka set up he was heavily protected by the defence and midfield, if we were more open he would have let a lot more in.

The issue was we bought the wrong replacements. Valdes wasn’t suited to the premier league and Guzan couldn’t understand that pawing every shot he saved to the middle of the 6 yard box was a bad idea.

I'm a fan of Steffen but don't think it can be put down to 'rustiness', he's played pretty much the entire season for us.

I have noticed at corners we "allow" at least on of the opposition to jostle and generally get in the keepers way without a defender stepping in.

yet when we have a corner we never put anyone on the keeper, the result being the keeper can come out unhindered for catching practice collecting high balls .
