The Sporar Phenomenon

Firstly, I think Sporar is the best striker we have had in a good while and I really hope we can sign him permanently. The post is more trying to understand how the whole Sporar phenomenon thing developed? What is it about him that has caused the fans to get so excited about him? I can't remember such adulation for a player in years and years, especially a loanee (which can be a dangerous thing). Is it his style of play? Is it his interviews? Is it is funny dances on social media?

I like Sporar but not sure the hyperbole around him on this thread is fully justified. As our main striker he doesn’t have a great scoring record. He is subbed often. He needs to manage his serial diving - it’s not a great look for him or the club. He is offside a lot but that could be the service. I want to see a bit more before I commit to him being ‘the future’ but fully accept he is a massive move up from Assomolonga and Fletcher but at 58 with a dodgy hip and knee I would be an improvement on them!

He's clearly a quality player with a much more ability than the dreadfully limited Assombalonga. That's probably the main reason, but it helps that he also works and puts in the effort. Again, that is the opposite of Assombalonga.

I think it's refreshing after seeing Britt / Fletcher stealing a living over 4 years.

I think we've been waiting for a new batch of forwards as we couldn't move those duds on due to wages.

That said I agree... He's become a bit of a social media legend.

This. What a miserable time when we had to endure with wasters like Gestede, Britt, Fletcher and Brathwaite getting paid lots of money for producing very little. People like Watmore, Uche and Sproar are a breath of fresh air as you know the minimum you'll get is 100% effort.

I'd agree his goalscoring needed to improve, but recently it has.

The question is, is this a purple patch of form, or a sign that he's adjusted to the English game, and this is his true self?

If it's the latter, he's definitely worth keeping. If it's the former, he may join Jelle Vossen in the list of neat, tidy, popular but ultimately not that effective loanee strikers.

He's clearly found some online connection with those that tweet etc. Has the makings of a cult hero, and it's not necessary to be that good on the pitch.

But.. does it need to be justified? It mainly just a bit of fun. The guy obviously has a bit of character and sense of humour so people respond to it. The fact that he acknowledges the crowd singing and tweets about it also encourages the fans to do it more. Yeah he's not really ripped up the league so far, but he is doing well and improving under Wilder. Hopefully the best is yet to come for him.

I'm probably in the minority, but I'm not sure I see him being as great as many other fans do.

I think he's a tidy player, technically good, but I'm not sure he's ever going to be a prolific scorer. His game is about movement and positioning, so he obviously relies on a decent supply and isn't going to score many goals out of nothing.

Having said all that he's a good a anything we've had at this level for a long time, bar Bamford, which in part speaks to how hard we've found it to get decent forwards in.

1 in 3 record so far, but that was half under a very poor coach. 3 in 8 games under Wilder, think he will score another 8-12 goals in the second half of the season, giving a near 1 in 2 record.

Perhaps after suffering Assombalonga for so long, Boro fans are drawn to see a player who is obviously trying.
This. You can see the effort he puts in clear as day. I genuinely believe he's enjoying his time here too. I hope we sign him permanently regardless of the stipulations involved in the loan deal.
