* The South Yorkshire Play-Off Final: Owls v Tykes at Wembley Match-Day Thread *

Barnsley have been done by the officials here.

That is never a red and they should have had a pen.

Poor refs yet again in the EFL.
I think the pen call was correct (but I don't think it would have been over-ruled by VAR if given (which is another massive problem with VAR)).

The red from the ref on-field is reasonable. He won't have seen exactly what happened due to the bodies of the players. VAR could clearly see there was no contact with the leading foot. Not dangerous play in my book.

100% - seems like some sort of directive to get Sheff Wed back in the Champo. Clear penna as he clearly took him out after the ball had been touched by the forward..as for the sending off the guy just tried to clear the ball..no intent at all..we might as well give up now 😔

Dives in (accidentally)with studs showing about a foot off the floor. Lucky not to catch Gregory - with the flying foot. Can't deny it is dangerous.

Think yellow would have been right. No way VAR can overturn that though.

Definite penalty though... can't understand why VAR did not give that

I think English officials are too thick to make VAR work, it seems to work properly in other leagues and in major tournaments.
It's the whole subjective vs objective thing that they use to decide whether to get involved.

It's clear from the video that the refs position makes his subjective call worth revisiting.

If he had given a yellow, would VAR have asked him to look to give a red? I very much doubt it.

Feel for Barnsley here. The ref had to give a yellow and if wrong upgrade it to a red through VAR if necessary but game has been spoilt.
