The Single Market... Johnsons lies come home to roost

Sooner or later the EU may impose sanctions assuming they are able to under the agreement.

I suppose part of Johnson's 'thinking' is that they won't act without going through international law first so giving him the time to kick the can further down the road

It certainly is. I suspect that October might be a month that Johnson struggles to survive.
absolutely, and not before time.....sadly it won't be the party that suffer though, they'll do what they always do, rally together, blame him for incompetence, then push some other billionaire stooge into the hot seat with promises of 'levelling up', and opportunity for the poor etc.

he opportunity missed was the soft Brexit; a divorce that left us as part of the SM and CU but that ended our political Union. It was never going to happen though sadly because it wasn’t sold in that way and there was never any intention to deliver it in that way.
It was sold that way by some of the official leave campaign who specifically stated that no one is talking about leaving the single market etc. but you are right, it was always going to end up this way, because it was lies to steal votes. If they had specifically stated leave means leaving the single market, then they wouldn't have won.

Incredible what’s going on over in the country now. UK took back control of the sovereignty by putting a border in your own territory, destroying your supply chains, creating your own labour and goods shortages and putting off actually implementing the ‘oven ready’ deal until it’s maybe less rubbish and even more the borders are creaking as there Is no cooperation with France anymore with those trying to get across the channel.

Has there ever been a more catastrophic peacetime example of a nation committing self-harm?

The agreement means, as I understood it, that they can impose sanctions without going through courts. Not sure they will but who knows

Yes we will still have tory ideology but perhaps without the incompetence, we can hope. One thing is for sure there aren't many worse than Johnson and those who are won't get elected by the party.

maybe, but then the party elected Johnson 🤷‍♂️

The did BM and the 2019 election sort of supported that decision. He is popular until he isnt.

I cant see patel or JRM taking over as PM. Raab is too thick. Maybe Gove or Sunak. I don't like either but surely more competent than Johnson, who really is incompetent and lazy and corrupt and self-serving and weak.

I could just about live with incompetence if the intentions were honest and decent. It is the incompetence coupled with the lack of decency, corruption and moral vacuity that does for me.
You're right, you can overcome incompetence by surrounding yourself with smart people and working hard. When your leading politician doesn't fulfil any of the criteria needed... who knows what you do. Scrap the current electoral system would be a good idea, that might help. Teach basic politics in schools might also help.

Oh I don't know. I suspect 30 or 40 years ago the electorate would be marching down Whitehall to complain about 140,000 dead and billions syphoned off to tory backers.

Corrupt and incompetent. The most-used words about this bunch. Scary thing is, they still attract 40% of the vote and they are in the process of making it harder to oust them with their Electoral Bill (2nd reading today, I believe). We're heading the way of Hungary and Belarus when we should be looking at completely overhauling the ridiculous FPTP and unelected upper chamber system we have.

Germany will not vote for it. Apart from China the only other countries products I see are German. Try telling the CEOs of BMW, VW and Merc they can't sell their cars and trucks in the UK.

Johnson was the power hooker who opportunistically grasped the leadership, temporarily palatable to the 1922 Committee, and perhaps the only person deceitful enough to tell everyone they were getting exactly what they voted for and getting them to believe it.
He was the man for a very specific time, but will pay a huge personal price as his deceit and untrustworthiness is revealed to everyone. It was only ever going to be a matter of time over that.
The Conservative Party is ruthless and will throw him under one of the buses he had his posters on when it suits them. That will be very shortly.
Then the moderates will reassert themselves and move quickly towards the Single Market. They will do this to retain power and force the lunatic far right to shut the **** up.

I am personally still highly delighted to have left the EU full mechanism, but hope to see the softer solution re-emerge with the sort of Economic only union I had thought and hoped most likely. I think we will move towards it, whichever party is in power. The ultra right wing of the Conservative party will finally be silenced/ consigned to oblivion - their big play over.
Leaving us in Thatcher's Single Market economic union, but out of the political/wider behometh. I think this is what the vast majority of Leave voters wanted and pragmatically expected would be delivered, without fully grasping the internal guerrilla struggles within the Tory party.
It was always possible to achieve this and get everyone sanguine, even happy; but for the perennial pressures within that party.

As to who leads this direction to a Single Market destination, I am far less clear.
The current leadership group are all opportunists rather than leaders and most of them I wouldn't want on a village council, let alone in British Government. Patel, Raab, Williamson, Jenrick, Zahawi, Shapps, Truss are horrendous, vacuous, morally bankrupt and couldn't lead anything.
They won't put in position an unelectable reptile like Gove, so who has been keeping their head down?
Who will re-emerge on a Single Market manifesto? Sunak maybe; does anybody know what he really stands for yet?

Whilst I struggle to understand why you are delighted and whilst this was always the outcome I had fully expected and predicted, it's a discussion there is little point in revisiting. Where we have genuine common ground is in the solution. Single market and customs union membership in some sort of soft Brexit would probably have meant nobody quite got exactly what they wanted and everybody would have been a touch aggrieved. That is often the hallmark of a reasonable outcome or deal. And it's where we need to get to. Like you though I don't see the path to get there such is the entrenchment and such is the, I'm afraid to say, ignorance and apathy.

One thing I am certain of though is that Sunak is not any better than Johnson. He may be a bit brighter, a bit more subtle but ultimately he is a pig with lipstick on. He won't improve anything.

It's good to be right 100% of the time.

Sorry but isn't that exactly what Brexiteers were saying about getting their cake and eating it from the deal with the EU. Didn't happen then. Won't happen now.

I think the EU will be slow to impose any sanctions because they are very wary of being painted as the bad guys. But sooner or later they will run out of patience with this clown.

But still managing to putting a bill through Parliament this week. Totally unnecessary, until you realise it’s designed to disenfranchise anything up to 3.5Million people’s ability to vote. Those without photo bearing ID
Because of the inadequacy of our constitutional arrangements impossible to stop.
The Republican Party in some states in the US are pulling the same stunt.
