The Single Market... Johnsons lies come home to roost

I read that article today also. It is a bit short on facts outside the basic premise that the electorate were lied to. I also read an article about brexit buyers remorse from several business owners.

It is almost certainly going to go t*ts up.

Unless he agrees an extension to the grace periods with the EU then come 1st October things are going to start getting much worse.
It certainly is. I suspect that October might be a month that Johnson struggles to survive.

Rising covid cases seem likely, real shortages and price increases for food meaning people are going without.

There may be backlash from the afghan withdrawal and I think Labour have their first party conference under starmer

seems like he's going to unilaterally extend the grace periods again. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-58461991

He shouldn't have agreed to the deal if he wasn't going to abide by it which is all the EU is asking him to do. Exposed as an untrustwothy chancer for the whole world to see.

Sooner or later the EU may impose sanctions assuming they are able to under the agreement.

I read that Adi thanks. I looked at the original agreement and it seems to say the same but not an easy read.

Will the EU actually impose sanctions do you think?

I honestly don’t know. It’s a difficult balance to strike for them. At some point they will have to I guess. Really really hard to predict. One thing I feel certain about is that they will outthink and outplay their Uk counterparts!

What do you think?

I sort of hope they do Adi but don't think they will. The reason I hope they do is because I genuinely believe it will have to get much worse before there is an apitite to change it.

I think some people are going to really suffer over the next few years and I genuinely regret my vote to leave. I never expected Johnson to be anywhere near this.

I get that. I fully expected this to be the Brexit we ended up with and so it doesn’t surprise me. The opportunity missed was the soft Brexit; a divorce that left us as part of the SM and CU but that ended our political Union. It was never going to happen though sadly because it wasn’t sold in that way and there was never any intention to deliver it in that way.

I agree with you though that it needs to get visibly and demonstrably worse before a critical mass of dissent is achieved. The problem is the damage that will have to be done to get there.

That could also give fuel to the fire that the EU are the cause of our problems and spun for all its worth by the Tories

We agree on that part Adi. Maybe I was stupid thinking that we would never self harm to the extent we did.

No I don’t think so. I don’t think that was stupid at all. An entirely reasonable basis to make your decisions. We’ve all ended up here together with failures on both sides of the argument and now we need to somehow get back.

The only people I criticise are those that continue to defend this Brexit, the one we ended up with. Because that has to be either disingenuous or deluded given what is happening in front of our eyes. I wouldn’t criticise anyone for voting on the basis of either what was promised or for expecting a reasonable version of Brexit.

Isn't October meant to be when we start imposing more control over what comes into the country from the EU, we'll definitely see the can getting kicked down the road, despite having years to plan it or useless government still aren't ready to "take control" of our borders, even though it's what they got voted in for. We're more likely to see action through the WTO over this, as it stands it's an unfair benefit to EU countries importing to the UK.

Erm, what?

They're are additional controls for incoming goods, you are right. I am not sure anyone would get upset for us not imposing them.

They're are additional export legislation coming in too which we can't avoid so delays will increase at our major ports.

At the end of the year there are further restrictions coming in too.
