The silence on covid/long covid is deafening.

IMG_1931.jpegWith all the talk about economically inactive people and rising numbers of long term sick, how can anyone have that discussion and expect to be taken seriously without mentioning the ongoing pandemic and the consequences of long covid?

This graph shows the numbers beginning to rise sharply from the onset of the pandemic and continuing since.

If we are to get growth, and get people back to work, an actual strategy to mitigate this is needed, starting with clean air and ventilation.

Long covid worries me, if the stats are correct aren't a lot of people likely to get it at some point?

What makes you say that those are COVID related? As I read that graph it is the total number of "economically inactive long term sick".

What are the stats for long COVID?

There are more than 2 million people with long covid in the UK.

Can you think of another reason the graph rises steeply from early 2020?

The Statistic you seem to have pulled that figure from is this

ONS

That was the figure in Feb 2023 for people self-reporting symptoms after four weeks.

Latest figures that I can find are in the Lancet article of August this year which estimates just over 1 million with "long COVID" of which only a small percentage are incapacitated by it, something like 700,000 having had the condition for over a year. But no figures on to what extent that is affecting their "economic activity".

I think the replies on this thread are pretty illustrative of the issue to be honest.

I didn’t say the whole rise is due to long covid but it’s frankly illogical to suggest none of it is. Even if only some of it is related then a strategy is needed if we want to reduce long term absence for growth.

However instead of actually considering that, people go straight on the attack.

It’s like a national collective delusion.
