24 months after seeing us beaten at Bradford & on the verge of not only relegation but the summer of torture that followed to now on the brink of returning back to the 1st division after being relegated from the top flight in 82
23rd April we travelled to Portman Road in good spirits after not only losing only 2 games that calander year but only conceding 2 goals in 7 games we were a tight unit & in confident mood going in to this fixture
What could possibly go wrong....................

2 players in RIP Dalian Atkinson & Mark Brennan tortured us all afternoon, INFACT, Ipswich battered us
Dalians pace was electric, he was awesome that day when bagging, probably, his 1st hat trick for Ipswich & on his way to the top, Ipswich ran out 4-0 winners that afternoon & as if things couldn't get any worse & with time almost up Colin Cooper received his marching orders
Shell shocked & battered Boro were a sorry sight & something us fans wern't us to of late, the long journey home was a bit subdued
3 games to go to keep our promotion challenge on track

Bruce's team

Stephen Pears
Dean Glover
Colin Cooper
Tony Mowbray
Brian Laws
Gary Pallister
Bernie Slaven
Stuart Ripley
Trevor Senior
Paul Kerr
Mark Burke
Sub
Gary Hamilton who replaced Dean Glover in the 2nd half

I went, its always a long drag to Ipswich, we got brayed, Atkinson was unstoppable, if Pears had a got in the road of some his shots that went in it would have killed him. Sat upstairs in the terrace If I remember, nice day but miserable journey home that made us ask questions of ourselves.
We knew they were a decent side as although we beat them at home, they played us off the park 1st half losing 0-1, and I remember their capt afterwards saying they couldnt deal with the crowd once the Boro got their tails up, 10k there he said it felt like 40K panic set in on corners.

The Leicester game shortly after was a heartbreaking moment... but we did it:love:

I was there as well - one of those days when you were happy to only get beat by four. One of the best hat tricks I’ve seen in person

Cheers funky, not seen those goals since that day
His pace was awesome, I'd not seen someone that fast & direct, his pace was phenomenal

Drove up from London and only time I have ever been to Ipswich - a bit of a shocker as we had a good defence that season I remember Atkinson's second goal a real screamer. I seem to remember a couple of drunk middle aged Ipswich fans constantly flashing their wallets at us and shouting loads of money. I always thought we would go up in 1988 from about November onwards because we had such a momentum of positive spirit.

Yes red they were to the right of us, they were references the cash remark to Harry Enfield of the time, 'Loads of money'

Best hattrick I've seen live - I thought he was going to be the biggest thing.
Went on to London that night for night out. The drive down to north London was very quiet after the match - thought it had gone.
