The republicanism thread.

I'm neutral on the whole Monarchy vs Republic debate but to be honest I'd say that the last week has shown us that the majority in this country are still in favour of the monarchy, and we won't have a Republic within any of our lifetimes.

I will say that I did respect and admire Queen Elizabeth and feel the Royal Family as a whole have been impressive with the way they've behaved and conducted themselves throughout this. We forget that they are human beings at the end of the day and haven't had the chance yet to grieve.

It has made me feel proud that so many from across the world have travelled over to pay their respects to our former head of state.

People like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis. You can't trust people.

Most people don't understand the monarchy and/or whether it is right or wrong. The Queen's death has caused any discussion to be shut down as "not the right time". A Coronation could allow the topic to be brought up when it can't be dismissed as disrespectful. Once the issue has been given a platform then people that consider themselves to be royalists might actually learn what it is all about and name a decision on the rights and wrongs instead of just "because tradition".

If it did become a mainstream news topic, how would BBC react. They are so pro-Royal but I'm not sure whether their impartiality will go as far as fair discussion on republicism Vs monarchism.

I'd get rid of the monarchy tomorrow. Nothing to do with the people themselves - I was quite fond of the Queen from what I saw of her, and I actually like Charles - but it's a ridiculous and anti-democratic institution. Having said that, when I look at one of the main driving forces towards abolition - Murdoch - my resolve weakens. If he's on one side, I instinctively want to be on the other.

Having said all that, I think the people of our country - and I'm talking specifically about England here - must like being on their knees. You can see it in their voting history and how protective they are of their betters.

I think banished is a bit harsh. I'm a royalist but have no problems with people having a different point of view. I think the problem is if you want to air your views do it on your own thread and not one that was blatantly in full support of the royals. Doing it there was always going to annoy posters on that topic.
