The media scrutiny of Reeves Budget

Said this on another post, but the level of scrutiny from the media has been ridiculous.

All these amateur economists now having their two penneth, and wheeling out Tories to comment....... jeeeeeezzz, like the past 14 years never happened.

To come up with what they have shows - generally - what a good budget it has been. After 14 years of Tory mis managing of the public finances, refreshing to see a more robust budget, not just knee jerk cuts to please the money men.

Sunak being more narked than I've ever seen him shows it must be hitting the wealthy 👍
"and wheeling out Tories to comment....... jeeeeeezzz"

So you're against an opposition party having their say and holding a serving government to account? Interesting...

What you mean by that Labour told the NFU at conference last year that they would not change inheritance tax on agricultural land but here we are with tax on agricultural land so they have lied to the whole industry that supported them
You do realise that Inheritance tax wasn’t introduced to farmers in this budget it has always been there but because of the relief they didn’t pay it but now that full exemption has been limited to a £1m but with other reliefs goes up to £2m and you call that disgusting? They also only pay 20% not 40%. Also I can assure you the whole farming industry did not support Labour at the last election.

You’ve taken offence to this by watching the NFU spokesman on Sky News I suspect. The NFU have been slightly if understandably disingenuous as they are protecting their own. Do you actually know how many farmers are actually affected by this. I will help you out with some research.

The thing is whats the percentage of farms that will fall under this in 10=20 years time the value of land is going up all the time it's just labour lied saying they would not introduce this and they have its ridiculous.

Land worth over £2m going up further and you are worried for them??? By the way there is nowhere in Labour manifesto that says they wouldn’t touch inheritance tax relief on agriculture.

No, you have cherry picked the quote - the Tories were commenting on Reeves budget like the previous 14 years were nothing to do with them. The countries finances are a mess, the Tories ransacked the public coffers yet their attacks on Reeves did not actually accept the severity of the situation they caused.

they have lied to the whole industry that supported them
That’s not true though is it. Every farmer I know has voted Conservative including the last election and even the NFU in their analysis of the three party manifestos praised the Conservatives. So your comment is wrong. The ones I know at CofC supported Brexit too as did the NFU and the damage it has done to that industry far outweighs a 50% subsidised death tax on 400 farmers of wealth.

Just noticed Darren Jones getting a right grilling by the media over the last 24 hours.

Only caught a bit of QT last night, but it did seem the questions were a lot more "in depth" than if it were a Tory budget.

Sky doing similar too.

Seriously can't even remember Truss or Kwarteng getting half this level of questioning after their "true Tory budget". Mental

The opposition is meant to challenge the budget it’s nothing new.
Don't think anyone has a problem with the opposition doing it.

Unless you mean most of the media are effectively a propaganda wing of the Tory Party. In which case fair point, although not sure the media should be challenging one government's budget more than the other.

But suppose sadly that's where we are as a country.

Challenging "the budget" shouldn't focus on one or two contentious policies. Everything has been about the increase in NI and the farmers.

That's it.

Trying to make out the 4 horsemen have saddled up and everything is fecked isn't unbiased journalism - which we do not have in this country.

Analyse the budget, grill the MPs......but when the Tories have had it soft for 14 years, now they are attacking Labour for trying to sort their mess.....shows what a sh*tshow the country has become.
