The Last of Us TV Show

It did move the story of Joel and Ellie forward a bit though, we see them making their way from the outskirts of the QZ to Bill's town, where they find the car that will take them to the next city. Ellie gets her hands on a gun in Bill's house, something which kept being alluded to during this episode and the previous that Joel didn't want her to.

We have the scene where Ellie goes into the basement, shows she's not scared to scavenge for stuff and she has the moment where she takes a closer look at the walker/clicker, as well as when Joel tells Ellie about what they think actually caused the outbreak, what happened in the initial days of it with the skeleton pits.
Yes fair enough. It definitely had quite an 'innovative' feel as you don't often get an episode largely (almost exclusively) focused on a romantic, gay relationship in a mainstream TV show. I suspect this is why it has received a lot of the plaudits, which is fair enough, but I just hope it does actually feel at the end of the series like that episode was integral to the storyline as well and not just a novelty factor.

For context, I have played both games and have been really looking forward to this - with trepidation. The story is excellent, and the show is following the story very closely, which I am happy about.

EP03 was incredible in my personal opinion. The juxtaposition of Frank and Bills relationship when considering Joel and Ellie's is very subtle and nuanced. It sets up Joel and Ellie's relationship fantastically. Bill didn't really have a purpose in life until Frank came along. Joel has lost Tess now so is in a similar position emotionally with nothing to live / fight for. The final line in Bill's letter "take what you want to look after Tess", was cutting. It helps us to understand why Joel is doing what he is doing.

We see the development of Joel and Ellie's relationship massively in this episode through the optics of Bill and Franks relationship.

Like I said, I have the benefit on knowing the story so I can probably pick that out, knowing what is to come. Potentially of course.

OR, I just read too much into things and it was just an episode about homosexuals playing the piano.

I think this has the potential to be a 10/10 show.

It's precisely because people haven't played the game that they need to develop these characters, you would struggle to do it in the same way as the game as the story unfolds from player exploration, finding notes, deciding to show things to people etc. people who haven't played the game won't know peoples backstory or why Joel or Ellie might care about them or be so impacted by their passing

The show is doing very well. It took game of thrones until season 4 to break the numbers last of us is getting. I don't think it's getting high praise just because it's an LGBT story, last of us has always had a very strong LGBT theme and there will be more to come 100%

Just finished watching. I’ve never been emotional grabbed by tv as I was in the episode.

I’ve cried episode 1 and 3 now
What did you find so emotive you shed tears? Just asking out of genuine curiosity. I was nowhere near that emotionally invested. Obvs in episode 1 with his daughter but I didn't feel invested in the characters that much as it was the first one, same with episode 3 as it was our first real time spent with Bill and Frank. I can't imagine feeling that bothered about any of the characters for a few more weeks yet.

I cry at Rocky 4 every time Apollo dies, every time I want him to survive somehow even though I know what happens.

As I say, at the end of the season when we revisit the impact of episode 3 I will then be able to judge better at that point how important it was to the story. I am fully open-minded about that and certainly not claiming it was just gay 'propaganda' like the bloke in that IMDB review.

I've never played the game, so all these snippets from people who have, i love, and i'm heavily invested in this show and cant wait for the next ep.

I read all articles after the episodes air which show easter eggs including stuff hidden in plain sight for those who played the game.

The last episode was slower than previous eps but i did enjoy it and im interested to see any flashbacks involving Bill and Frank but from someone whose never played the game, the show feels different from TWD or other zombie shows already and seems to be aiming at being about the relationship between the two main characters.

I'd expect there to be no more Nick Offerman scenes because their story has been told and in my eyes it was complete, and in more detail than the games - there will be other characters to give stories to coming up. Perhaps he might appear in a flashback like Anna Torv has but he's not going to have jumped out that window and come to Joel's rescue later or something. That is totally not their writing style at all.

100%, the entire gaming series is about people.

There's a 2 hour downloadable content called left behind where you see how Ellie got infected. She alluded to this in ep 2 when she mentioned being in the museum. I don't think there was any combat on that 2 hour add on, it's just storyline expansion and exploration.

Once the season ends, I'd highly recommend watching a "Lets play" video on YouTube where someone will play through the game and you can see all the similarities and differences, you could even do this as the show progresses and stop as it catches up

This is one of the new ps5 remaster with updated visuals

It
it was the bit where frank asks bill to end his life and their last day together. Just found it really emotional tv. I also cried episode 1 when Joel’s daughter died.

Although we only go a limited time with them both I thought they captured a sense of their relationship within 50 mins unbelievably. Writing was incredible imho

I’m not a crier most of the time. No show has made me cry twice that’s for sure

Fair enough. My missus cried at the Eddie the Eagle film.

Fantastic podcast hosted by the voice actor for Joel in the game, the director of the TV shows and the guy who also wrote the game.

Explain alot of the decisions made throughout the episodes.

And explained in the 3rd podcast, the games always started with an open window, with curtains blowing in the wind. So it's a call back to the games.

TBF I’d have given the episode 8/10. And had it been a straight couple I’d have probably given it 7/10.

But yes it’s clear that the “review bombing” is skewing the result. I suppose when you do something “edgy” you run this risk.

Have to say I'm hoping the opposite. I'd like more little vignettes throughout the series. Seen a few posts where you're saying it didn't progress the main story, but what if the main story is the world they're all in rather than just Joel and Ellie's journey from A to B?

Having said that I played the game years ago and don't really remember if there's many more characters that could get the same sort of attention.

I just feel, given we’re only 3 episodes in, the time for “spin offs” is later. I’m not saying episode 3 was a spin off, and I hope it wasn’t personally.
