The Last of Us TV Show

As I said earlier, they are adding episodes like Bill and Frank to give backstory to characters that they couldn't do in the game or movie, they devoted an entire episode to it because it's the whole point of making it a TV show.
Hmm ok. Well I think they could have done that alongside focusing on the main story too, and split the episodes’ priorities. It was the thing that used to do my head in about TWD, a whole episode dedicated to Carol living in a cave somewhere for 57 minutes until Daryl turns up or whatever. It’s not for me. Fine, if you want to develop other characters do it but not at the expense of the actual story. Just my personal preference. Otherwise it just feels like they want to pad it out to make it 10 episodes instead of 6.

I don't think so, myself.
They made a point of showing Bill as quite decrepit and immobile himself, it's not like he killed himself whilst still in his prime. He was an old man caring for his terminally ill partner.
I also think it would probably spoil their intention of showing an almost "happy" ending in the post-apocalypsic world.
The world went under in 2003, when homophobia was far more widespread and gay marriage was illegal in Massachussets, they ended their lives in a happy marriage on an attempt at a perfect day.

It had also been weeks since their death when Joel and Ellie got there, and it doesn't look like a living person left with anything from that house.

I wondered if it was weeks or if they got their just slightly too late? The flowers were only slightly wilted outside and all the house plants looked healthy. The electric fence was still running and I'm sure it was said in an earlier post it was gas powered as he said keep the gas running? Although presumably he would have changed to solar as doubt they'd be still finding usable gasoline that many years later

I think you're going to be in the minority here if you're suggesting they should just condense the story down and get on with getting from A to B instead of taking a one off opportunity of fleshing out an already well written rich world and characters. This is literally what people want

They pretty much have to, the game takes 14 hours for first game but we don't have to watch Joel fight individual enemies, collect ammo, sneak etc. providing backstory and adding context is key.

You need to honestly just forget about walking dead. As said walking dead was purposefully padded out to create that bell curve because the zombie effects were so expensive so they literally had to focus on the people with intermittent zombies. They had their budget slashed after first season which is why it totally changed pace, and they dragged out story arcs over multiple seasons.

The last of us was always about the people in that world more than the outbreak itself, the characters are what make it what it is

The 80s music started playing at the end of episode 1, which was an indication that Bill hadn't reset the countdown in weeks, Frank only told him on that morning together that he wanted to kill himself, so I presume Bill had been keeping on top of the system up until that point.

Joel and Ellie would have taken days to get from Boston to Lincoln too.

Ah yeah good shout!

Well I may well be in the minority. As above, I didn’t even know the game or show existed until Jamie Redknapp brought it to my attention. But I am going to judge it as I see it as a TV show (that’s made a good start). I’m not going to buy a PlayStation and play all the games before I watch it, presumably HBO don’t expect everyone to do that. It has to reach beyond the audience of the games.

RE TWD fine, I will try to forget about it, but I really loved the first 3/4 seasons and felt like I had my fingers burnt with it. Wish I’d given up after season 5 instead of wasting a significant chunk of my life on it. I’m hurt!

Read the comics then, they're available online. It's miles better than the tv show.

My girlfriend has never played the games and this is her favourite tv show now, she had tears at last nights episode - don't think any other tv show has had that effect on her.

Well that was always going to be a polarising episode... brave of them to create a whole episode around those characters so early on in the series. Bill really isn't given as much character development in the game as he had in that episode. Is he alive?

Does anyone think there could be a chance that Bill is still alive? Frank asked him if the drugs would ‘be enough’, what if they weren’t, do we actually see him put drugs in the bottle of wine because he doesn’t pour any into his glass?

I just want to see more of Nick Offerman.
That was absolutely my thinking. The note told Joel not to go in the room, and the window was open so Bill could have got out. As others have said, it seems a bit of a waste of an episode, as good as it was, if they're both dead and won't feature anymore.

Well I think its fine to have high hopes but we are only 3 episodes in.

Anyway, I'm obviously viewing it differently to many others on this thread and don't have any knowledge of the games, but I do think it has made a very good start and will be watching next week. I think episode 3 could have focused on Bill/Frank as well as the main story personally, and I do think some of the reception to that episode has been a bit OTT, but what do I know.

Why would he need to climb out a window?
If he hadn't killed himself, he could have just walked out the door and buried his husband rather than leaving him rotting in the bed.

He'll be dead too.

Fair point, but then why not ask Joel to chuck them both in the hole that Frank fell into? There was also a random shot of the hole too.

I'm with you here. I've not played the games or read the comics and was thinking the same as you. It was a good episode but I thought they could have developed the main story alongside this more.

I am enjoying the series so far but it seems a bit of a slow start.

Exactly it’s a game, the game doesn’t have time to fully develop all the things in there. It’s an opportunity for the fan base to understand the characters more, and it gives people who are not games the right level of understanding the characters

I agree with you. I'd never even heard of the game. So far I've found the TV series OK, but a bit slow... but I'm sure it will build.
The main body of last night's episode seemed somewhat tangential to me, so it will be interesting to see how it fits in.

It did move the story of Joel and Ellie forward a bit though, we see them making their way from the outskirts of the QZ to Bill's town, where they find the car that will take them to the next city. Ellie gets her hands on a gun in Bill's house, something which kept being alluded to during this episode and the previous that Joel didn't want her to.

We have the scene where Ellie goes into the basement, shows she's not scared to scavenge for stuff and she has the moment where she takes a closer look at the walker/clicker, as well as when Joel tells Ellie about what they think actually caused the outbreak, what happened in the initial days of it with the skeleton pits.
