Talking of Windscale reminded me of this Not the Nine O’clock News SketchWatched the last one tonight on catchup. He went into Sellafield and showed what is was like inside. Jesus. Hope nobody drops a bomb with all that stuff inside. 10,000 people are employed just to keep it safe for the next 100 years. Mentioned the fire in 1957 when it was called Winscale. This was the year before I was born. I nearly wasn’t!
I, like many others in this area, worked at Sellafield on the Thorpe site in the 80's and can still remember when I went over to test out (welding test). We drove through some beautiful countryside and came over a hill and Sellafield came into view. Sellafield looked totally out of place sat in a valley leading to the coastline, it had a menacing presence about it and looked out of place. The surrounding towns and villages of Egremont, Cleator Moor and Whitehaven had all seen better days and relied on the jobs that Sellafield provided. I worked on Thorpe for three years, made some good friends and loved the area. I spent hours on the fell's surrounding Ennerdale after work and even became a regular at the dog trials.Watched the last one tonight on catchup.
