The Hundred

I understand the need to bring in more cash especially for the counties but the T20 generates excellent crowds and people only have so much money.
If it taps into the Asian Market then it will do what it's intended to, but unless they get A list Indian players then I doubt it will take off long term. Plus do we really need a new set of rules to explain to new viewers?
Why not at least play it in the same T20 format?

Is anyone else not feeling this, players playing for cities rather than counties, limits on star players so root playing for notts, bairstow for wales? batsmen are batters, wickets are outs, 10 ball overs. why play a domestic format that isn’t replicated in internationals it’s not like this is going to take t20s place.

Why is there a need for it, what’s wrong with the t20 blast, going the same way as football, total greed and over saturation of the product.

Agree. I like all 3 forms of cricket, but I just don't see the need for this.

I'll be honest, I'm really looking forward to this. I'm a relative newcomer to the game but have absolutely fallen in love with it over the last couple of years (enjoying all formats). Even at the expense of footy, which is something I'd never thought I'd say!

The Hundred is definitely targeted at a different audience but my understanding is that tickets are selling very well. We're booked up for Birmingham Nottingham at Edgbaston, should be some decent players involved (Root, Williamson, Malan, Hales, Ali, Woakes etc). Decent value as well - think we paid £30 quid each.

Ultimately the proof will be in the pudding, if it's garbage I won't go again.
I’ve got 2 days at Headingley in the summer to watch us play India for £68. That’s value for money, in my opinion

I would rather they threw it at an IPL style T20. I guess it's not financially viable and the weather often ruins matches over here.

I would love to watch the best batsmen in the world. You watch the IPL and big bash and its light years ahead of our T20.

That said anyone who thinks T20 has been detrimental to the game must be mad. I'm a test match purist and love nothing more than a 5 day test match. Yet the 'skills' carried over from T20 just make it far more entertaining (also infuriating as openers can't open and just occupy the crease)

I will give the 100 a go. I'm not convinced at the moment but its at least sport in the summer. I almost prefer cricket to football these days. Just don't injure any key England players for the ashes😉🏏

I don't particularly think any sport needs Sky's money, as with football it will be frittered away on the elite.

Decentralising the county game would take the sport around the country more if they're looking to attract families who can't travel to matches.

Look at our two counties for instance, Yorkshire could play limited overs games across the old county, Middlesbrough, Scarborough, Sheffield etc, Durham to Stockton, Darlington, Sunderland, Gateshead etc.

I can't disagree with them wanting to get rid of the louts.
I think the main premise though is creating, as well as filling the grounds, a television spectacle that people in India want to watch (much like how we watch the IPL). For whatever reason the T20 Blast just doesn't compete on a global stage and England will be left behind in terms of revenue if there is no competitor to that.

I too seem to prefer cricket to football these days.
You can now watch every country championship game on a live stream these days, though if yorkshire play as badly as they did in the opening game then that might not be a good thing.
I just don't think there's room for another format.

This is exactly what they're trying to do, they've just trimmed the number of balls a bit and redefined a couple of the rules. It IS financially viable though and it will have most of the best batsmen in the world, that's why they're doing it, as long as people can stomach it being a glitzy/IPL style tournament. It never goes down well with traditionalists though.

If anything the 100 will supersede T20 in this country. The fact that you can watch all country cricket live on youtube for free now says it all, it doesn't make any money yet the England test side is 100% dependent on it surviving.

I think its basically a gimmick, but gimmicks are sometimes successful. Will Indians watch a new T20 tournament with loads of good players? Maybe, but there are already quite a few competitions like that. Will they watch a new tournament with a gimmicky 100-ball rule and a load of new made-up teams? I guess they've decided that they think its more likely and only time will tell if they're right.

Feels all wrong, but what do I know.

I reckon at least half the innovations in sport have felt all wrong to me at first.

TBF T20 was heavily opposed to start with, as was limited over cricket in the first place. Its just the next wave of innovations that will be unwelcome to people who already like the sport and see nothing wrong with it, and it may (or may not) help move it along. We'll have to see how it pans out.

Cricket needs someone's money at the moment, whether it is Sky's or someone else's. Having it on BBC as well will be a good thing as the BBC can effectively benefit from Sky's costly marketing push.
