The head spinning world of viral vertigo & Derby thoughts.

It’s Friday, I think, the last 4 days had become a whirling, blurring, dizzying mess of attempted stillness and confusion.

My first bout of vertigo and the unnerving fear of vomit inducing movement, eyes closed, sat up, silent, still, the whir of a cooling fan the soundtrack to the darkness.

Tomorrow is Derby Day, I think, and my first venture at reading was the Racing Post, something light and colourful to attune my eyes, not enough diesel in the car for a trip to Barnard Castle, but whether it’s the virus in my brain or just the onset of wear and tear madness I can’t get away from what a silly price the number one horse, Amhran Na Bhfiann, is, it is also the name of the Irish National anthem, maybe it’s a playlist and not the runners and riders at all ?

He has had 3 siblings try the unique demands of the classic tests of Derby and Oaks that have performed with credit, one, his sister, Was, won the Oaks at 20/1, and the other two ran well in 6th and 7th in their respective races, he looked green and burly on his comeback run that was sure to bring him on a typical O’Brien first run ton, but the form was more than franked with those finishing in front of him finishing 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the Irish Derby, the bare collateral equates to being around 4 lengths behind English King and Santiago, not the form of a horse that should be a 3 figure price and with potential improvement for the step up in distance and improvement expected he could be an extraordinarily priced winner in the most extraordinary of seasons or it might be that vertigo has trumped reason and I need more bed rest....

Enjoy your Friday night folks and have a great weekend

Me and my dad both get it. It really is awful. I can't even turn my head without feeling sick when I get it. Don't worry, it normally only lasts a few days. Though if you get it like my dad you're fuc*ed for a few weeks 😂

@American_Mary look at getting physio on your neck when this is over. My doctor said I have vertigo, physio said it was my neck. Since regular massaging, even self massaging I haven’t suffered. Touch wood! Sorry it was full of innuendo!

My deepest sympathy. I've suffered with a mild form of vertigo all my life, the spinning room, the need to vomit when you lift your head in the morning etc. A couple of hour's sleep would usually sort it. Then last year I had a bout of the really bad stuff - lifted my head and it was if I was laid a coin that had been spun in the air - like an ultra-violent version of the waltzers in 3D. It probably lasts only a second but it feels like an eternity and I cling onto the sides of the bed like my life depends on it. I didn't feel right for over a month and getting out of bed could take ten minutes with the fear of it suddenly recurring.

Eventually saw a specialist who put his hands on the side of my face and twisted my head several times then threw it quickly through 90 degrees onto the couch. Then the other side. This is apparently to release the crystals in the inner ear. He said that it hadn't had the desired effect according to his monitor, but I did begin to feel better afterwards.

Then I had physiotherapy on the neck which also helped - I also discovered by x-ray that I had arthritis at the top of my spine which was not helping.

Hope some of that proves helpful.

EDIT There are tablets you can take, but they had limited effect on me.

Jesus lads, sounds horrendous. I've had one or two head spins lasting a few seconds, but never felt sick.
Hope you get it sorted soon AM.

He threw your head onto the couch - twice!

AM just looked the result up. I read this thread at breakfast and you inspired me to put £5 ew on the 80-1 shot. Fabulous. If I knew you Id biy you a bottle of your choice!!!! Look after yourself.

Suffered vertigo related to an attack of neuritis back in the mid 90s. Lasted about a week, very worrying. Resolved itself as suddenly as it started.

Gutted I didn't spot this thread until this morning. Over the years AM has shown he knows his stuff so if I'd seen it in time I'd have definitely had a dabble. Well done to all who backed it, hopefully cashing in a bumper winning slip proves a good cure for vertigo! I'll just have to make do with a hot cuppa instead.

I was getting vertigo quite regularly. Doctors sent me to James Cook for tests where the put you through numerous scenarios to test your balance also squirting lots of hot and cold water in your ears, all very unpleasant. Upshot is they couldn't find anything serious but since the tests I have never had it again (touch wood). Apparently can be caused by loose bits of debris floating about in your ear causing imbalance. Hopefully the flushed them out.
