The Globe Stockton - Failed vanity project?

It seems that this accusation regarding the Stockton Globe being a 'failed vanity project' comes up every year by Stockton Conservative council members who are not happy that the Labour run council subsidises the theatre to the tune of £33,000 per month. The main gripe seems to be the lack of shows between the Christmas period to the beginning of February, meaning there are no punters coming into Stockton to see shows and spending their money in other establishments during this time. Maybe a pantomime could fill this gap.

Myself, I have been to see shows there and will do again, I like the Globe and think it is beautiful building. I also believe it is a small part of what Stockton is trying to achieve along with the riverfront. The question is though, what do Stockton residents think?

Probably yes. With hindsight I think keeping Cleveland County Council and abolishing MBC, SBC and R&C would have served us better.
We should be one county, too many authorities completing against each other in a small area. Things are hard enough where we are without competing with neighbouring authorities.
Although that sounds sensible and the way forward to the average working class man, could you honestly see these councillors wanting to give up their little bit of power?

We seem to be moving away from the subject here, would you be happy for your council to fund a project like the Globe?
I think they're talking about buying the old cinema on the corner of boro and linthorpe road. I'm not sure what the plan is though.
The bottom line is do we get a choice? I'd be more happy with an idea like this over Redcar's vertical pier.

Although that would be a good idea, would it not be competing against the Globe?

We need joined up thinking to prevent this kind of thing.
Is the Globe not competing against the Town Hall?

If M'bro council bought the Empire I think it would be used more as a theatre than a venue. The council had the chance to do this years ago when Faulconer had it, but they ballsed it up.

Serious problems with law and order in Stockton - I’d say that needs to be the priority rather than a venue with no bookings….

It's been full each time I've been there, once established there'll be more acts coming to town.

And a word of warning about that rag, the Gazette. It will try to put a damper on any local authority developments if there isn't a Tory mayor involved, be it Preston or Houchen.

I suppose it is, I watched Ranulph Fiennes at the Town Hall in 2021 and he was on the Globe last year. Seems silly to have the same events on at both theatres in such a short time.

Been to a lot of shows at the globe and I think it's fantastic that these acts are coming to the town, I don't mind the subsidy. It boosts the economy, plays off the hotel and when the high street changes are completed I think it will be a nice place.

A national authority would be an admin nightmare and all money would just get spent in London as it does now

To say the venue has no bookings is just silly, there was plenty on in dec and lots on in Feb, things get added throughout the year. It's just the Tory's grandstanding as usual - they did the same thing saying councillors should get paid less knowing it would it get approved yet they don't give up their own allowance

It's a top venue and people moaned for years that council knocks buildings down especially historic ones. The extra people staying at the hotel, car parks, restaurants, bars etc adds a lot to the economy/night economy
