The German Ocean - North Sea

So out for a wander today & stuck on the side of Saltburn Pier is a sign with local history, how many times have I wandered by without reading it... today I did... turns out "The German Ocean" as it was once called was is early'ish 1925 IIRC was renamed to The North Sea.. who knew...

Pier was originally 1500ft long... ship collisions & storms reduced it to what it is now...

Yep it hasnt been known as the North Sea for that long really. I was surprised when I first realised German Ocean, German Sea was always the name before 20th century.

When I see the holes in piers it makes me think of the turbines and the potential for collisions there.

Whilst reading that stuff about Redcar yesterday I discovered that there was a pier at Coatham. Even before it was completed it had been hit twice by ships and was completed in shortened form. The Regent Cinema stands on the end of the pier (unless they have started knocking it down yet?)

Opened in 1875, damaged in 1898 and never repaired, this structure was replaced by "The Glasshouse" in 1910 and by the Pavillion Theatre in 1928 which became the Regent Cinema in 1964.
