The final piece of the jigsaw Bobby Murdoch made his debut this day 1973

Literally the final piece in the jigsaw. He brought everything together. In all my days supporting Boro and watching football from around the world, I have never seen a better passer of a football. The phrase ‘he could land it on a sixpence’ anywhere on the pitch was written for him. I feel so lucky to have been a part of that teams journey.

Remember at the time I thought he might have been a bit past it, made his Celtic debut in 1962/3 andplayed in the Lisbon Lions side. But he was 29 when he came here. Still remember those passes .....

It was at about this point, Boro's third 0-0 in a row, that the media decided that we were a boring team, a position that they refused to shift from for years.

Murdoch was incredible, couldn't run much but his passing ability was a sight to see.
Not a great Manager but a wonderful footballer.
Was some team that one.

Always noticed when a Boro player got fouled he'd have a little chat with them whilst they had treatment. You could guarantee that within 5 minutes tops the opposition offender would end up in a crumpled heap although you never quite spotted what had happened.:)

Murdoch was a brilliant signing. No pace to speak of but a brilliant football brain that more than made up for this.

I remember a goal he scored against the Mackems at the Holgate End. Standing on the wall, face beaming with pride and elation- priceless.

I was at that Blackpool game, loads of Celtic fans there as well, everytime Bobby got the ball a massive cheer went out! What great times they were.UTMB.

Jimmy Flynn penned a really nice tribute poem to the late great Bobby Murdoch in the fanzine last Saturday.
It starts thus...
In the historical season of 73-74
A player quite unlike any other before
Walked through Middlesbrough Football Clubs door
New Manager Jack Charlton's first signing on a free
And an inspired move it proved to be
A player with qualities of onfield leadership
Who took command of Boro's promotion ship
A man who could organise both defence and attack
Became the trump card in Big Jack's promotion pack
