The end?

We are dealing with a complete nutter the like of which not seen since Hitler we need to be very careful with him or it will be curtains for everybody.

All I am saying is we shouldn’t be promoting conflict, that is what he wants, he wants all out war and to sink the west. The devastation already caused in the Ukraine shows that he does not care a jot about people.

For once in the history of the human race our politicians need to be clever and find a calm way of nullifying him. Hopefully Biden and his team have it in them.

Putin is cold and calculating but I don’t think that there is any evidence that he is mad.

I agree with your point re the need for some high quality leadership and statesmanship though.

Yes, I think we need to stand up to Putin but I really hope there is a bit more thought going on and not just crossing of fingers that he doesn’t nuke us if we cross his red line.

I think there is a little too much at stake for that.

I don’t have the answer but I very much hope those in power are looking for it.

always interesting to read your seemingly well informed views on the russian stuff @Smoggle

Thankyou, that’s very kind - I do hope I’m being balanced and careful with what I say and share, but I’m well aware that a lot of what we discuss on this topic comes down to utilising informed sources and our own conclusions, and those may or may not turn out to be correct!

Nah if you live on Teesside you will die very quickly. If you are lucky you will be vapourised you will flicker out of existence so quickly that the nerves in your skin will not register any pain signals because they cannot travel any quicker than the radiation that is killing you. If you are a bit further out you may be killed by the heat wave or the blast, again pretty quickly. Further out most of those to die will only last minutes or at most hours (in agony I'm afraid). If you last beyond that you're really fkked as you may die from any number of causes, latterly you will likely starve as crops fail during the ensuing Nuclear Winter which will even extend to the Southern Hemisphere despite fewer detonations there.

I'm not sure I want to be among the designated survivors eeking out their lives deep underground waiting for the dust and fallout to settle to emerge into a world with nothing much in the way of fauna and poisoned land.

Sleep well kids.
In the 80s me and my mates pledged with each other to be out there trying to head an SS-20 warhead into the net, or at least try and catch one. Nobody wants to be picking away like in Threads on irradiated wasteground (insert Teesside's Thatcherite industrial destruction comments here).

The finger seems to be being pointed at Russia for the Nord Stream leak / attack?

Sweden are investigating

USA telling it's citizens to get out as well

Russia did not have the means to sneak over the nordstream pipelines without being detected. They have only one sub in the baltic, Magnitogorsk, which is so noisy that the Swedes ping it the second the engines are started, just as a reminder. There are extremely sensitive listening devices in southern sweden/Gotland. Add tto that the fact that the area is pretty much a NATO base at the moment.
My mate still thinks Sweden are the most likely culprit. When asked about it, the defence minister replied "It is a military matter". That was it.
It could be the USA, given Biden's threat. The other rank outsider is a privateer like Khodorkovsky, who actually has the resources to fund such an attack by covert operatives. ... but that's a bit James Bond for me. Apparently the Finns had mined at least one of the pipelines too.

The CIA apparently warned Germany about it last week.

A false flag incident?

Sweden needs to be quick if it feels it is going to accuse Russia as the annexation will see more threats from Putin

I can’t see NS2 being used now until this was is over. I think the Germans will have to pull the plug
As I said, unlikely to be Russian and the Swedes aren't interested in seriously blaming Russia. They had other motives, as did the US.

These are men being sent to their deaths and for why? This isn't a war against the Russian people, its a cynical imperialist land grab by an idiot who dreams of reforming the Soviet Union at any cost.

These men being sent wholly underprepared to an unjust war that many of them won't even believe in is the cost of Putins madness.

We all need to hope he's taken care of and that it happens very, very soon. He's losing support from China and India, and even Serbia are saying this referendum is shambolic.

He needs a bullet to the head.

he's probably a psychopath but not a nutter, I don't believe he hears voices telling him what to do

Were promoting defence, to avoid greater conflict. I don't think he wants all out war, that will simply lead to his own death

So acquiescing to him will only lead to further war and destruction down the road. We acquiesced when he annexed crimea, and here we are he tried to take the whole of Ukraine.

If as you say he wants all out war, then you can't find a calm way, instead you have to let the bully know you're standing up to him, and see if he really is all that or not.

There alays comes a time to stand up to the bully, this is that time
You may be right on all counts but you may be completely wrong.

Time will tell.

There's an absolute **** tonnes worth of international effort going in to trying to sort it out.

It's just that effort's goal is not "Ukraine surrenders, Russia gets what it wants", which is what you seem to think is the correct path.
With all due respect to you I have never intimated I think Russia should get what it wants, far from it.

The international effort I see going on seems to involve billions of pounds of weapons.

In my opinion, that will not solve the problem.

It's the only thing that somebody can take from what you keep suggesting.

Russia is not going to end the invasion willingly, and it's certainly not going to withdraw from areas it occupies without being forced out.
"Giving peace a chance" amounts to Russia illegally gaining territory after causing the deaths of tens to hundreds of thousands.

They spent months trying to diplomatically prevent Russia invading. Putin ignored all attempts and started the invasion anyway.

Ensuring Ukraine has the capacity to defend itself is the only way to end the war without Russia stealing territory.

Without Western military aid, Ukraine would have lost more territory than it already has, and thankfully they're slowly pushing the Russians out of many areas they'd already taken because of the constant flow of aid, intelligence, support and weaponry.

Also, if the west just stopped all support for Ukraine tomorrow and started pushing for diplomacy, would the Ukrainians accept that and stop fighting? Very unlikely. If Russia had steamrollered through would Ukrainians have just given up? Again, unlikely, but there would be dozens more Buchas to be discovered in 20 years time.

Diplomacy didn’t work before or during this conflict, sanctions are not stopping Russia now nor are rebukes from allies, but the well armed and motivated Ukrainian military are.

I don’t see any other feasible option and certainly not any the Ukrainians (who let’s face it are the ones who should decide their future) would accept. If anyone has alternatives then I’m genuinely interested.
